My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic Pre-Alpha Preview.

By: DaisyMare Aug 15, 2011 | 15 Comments

Pre-Alpha video of actual game play sound and effects of MLP: Fighting is Magic.

MLP: Fighting is Magic is a fan-tribute, indie 2d Fighter developed and (planned to be) released by Mane6; It is based in the "My Little Pony" Franchise, in its most recent incarnation, "Friendship is Magic"

The First Official Release, coming soon, will include six fighting characters (Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Applejack and Pinkie Pie), who'll be joined by 11 more ponies in further DLC releases, until a complete roster of 17 characters is achieved.

It will come with both a story mode, and versus mode (online and Local), at launch.

Hey everypony,

With all the work going into the characters of the game it's natural players want a backdrop to have them kick flank on. The backgrounds of the game are getting a lot of attention put into them, to match environments from the show but also to be entertaining enough to look at as your favorite ponies comedically kick each other around. This stage in particular has taken many steps from the version seen in the pre-alpha video. From rearranging some objects, removing others and even changing the time of day. One of the changes currently in effect is with the shading, we're trying to even the colors out and instill a sense of drama but it has taken a slight deviation from the show's style.

The idle animations are the ones that show when you aren't doing anything. This is something we didn't have much reference for in the MLP:FiM show, because there is rarely any moment when the ponies are standing around looking ready to fight.  The idle is a good chance to try inject life and personality into our characters.

The one I've shown here is the crouched idle for Rainbow Dash. Dash is an energetic girl, so even when crouching she is looking ready to spring up at any moment. One thing that was interesting is her wings. To begin with they are an object that would move and scale for each frame of her breathing; but this makes them look very stiff and "glued on". So the animator split it up into the separate feathers, and animated them slightly out of step with each other. It's very subtle but it makes her wings look a lot more dynamic and lively!

TEMNO: A New Pony Game Based on Limbo

By: Daisymare Oct 15, 2012 | 2 Comments

Czech Artist Astonov is creating his own version of the hauntingly beautiful Limbo called Temno staring MLP Pyschopath Pinkamena Diane Pie.

I sat down with developer Astonov and talked to him about his game and how he is building it and here are a few things he told me.

First off the entire game is being built inside MMF2 (MultiMedia Fusion 2) from the ground up. All the physics are handled by the software and everything having to do with level design and layout are being done by Astonov.

Astonov himself has no knowledge of programming languages which is why he choose to utilize MMF2. All you need to do is create an active object and select its movement properties.

As for the animations of objects and background art, everything is done in Anime Studio. It allows him to build hand drawn objects and make simple yet fluid animations such as grass blowing in the wind and other atmospheric effects.

There are still issues that need to be worked on. Twilight doesn't yet possess the full animations needed to replicate the character animations seen in Limbo. So far she uses simple platformer movements.

Astonov uses his Nintendo DS and Colors DS drawing app to make the terrain and sky while using Photoshop to create the grass and leaves with custom brushes.

I'll keep track of development and update as Astonov finishes new sections of the game.

My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic Livestream Preview

By: Daisymare Feb 29, 2012 | 8 Comments | Updated: Feb 29, 2012

This is a three part question and answer preview of the current build of the game Fighting is Magic. New characters and moves are displayed new audio is heard and voice acting is now added. Special appearance of Fluttershy and talks of ports to Mac.

This game is building up a huge amount of hype not just in the Brony community but in other fighting communities simply because the game play is actually interesting for a basic fighting game made by an indie studio. The team ManeSix is doing things that shouldn't be able to be done with such a basic fighting engine. This game will be a great demo of what to expect when they decide to start producing their own original content. Watch the videos and keep an eye out for the accidental display of power that is Fluttershy.

This is a series of development videos for an upcoming game starting at the earliest stages of development. Many aspects of the game may and will change as the code is written but so far it looks pretty cool for another pony fan game.

I just wonder how many of these will be made before Hasbro starts buying up these developers and actually puts them on real big buget projects. Most of the games being made based on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic are turning out to be way better than most indie games based on souly original ideas.

While I like many of these games It would be nice to see a completely new type of game utalizing the characters from the show in a way that fits the source material.

Canterlot Gardens is currently going on in Strongsville Ohio this weekend and Dev Team ManeSix is on the scene with a special Canterlot Gardens build of Fighting is Magic for an impromptu fighting tournament.

http://www.twitch.tv/8wayrun

The link above will take you to the live stream of the game being played as we speak. I was told it will be going on all weekend but have no way of knowing for sure.

The "Tournament" seems to be more of a random grouping of players fighting until defeated than an actual tournament with a leaderboard.

The big news is that ManeSix is introducing Rainbow Dash in playable form and from I saw she is kicking ass all over the game. This brings the playable count up to 5 characters in the game with Fluttershy being the last one to be added before the games final version and release into the wild. Addictional characters will be released in updates in the future as balancing is improved with each update.

The EVO 2K build was leaked earlier this summer with only 4 playable characters and has since been rebalanced and improved.

No release date for the final version has been posted as of this writing.

3DS xl System overview

By: Daisymare Sep 2, 2012 | 3 Comments

90% bigger screen, nicer design, better feel in hand but what's not perfect with this new version of the 3DS? Well there are a couple issues I've noticed but I'm not sure if they matter to the hardcore gamer.

Pros

  • Bigger screens
  • Nice feel in the hands
  • Awesome for playing DS games
  • Quick and responsive
  • Price is good
  • Controls are good and touch screen is nice.

Cons

  • 3D isn't as good as I'd like on the bigger screen
  • 3D video recording is blurry and hard to look at
  • 3D photos are hit and miss
  • Built in games suck
  • Size and weight wears on the wrists.
  • Doesn't come with any 3DS games
  • Wi-Fi doesn't seem to connect with the net.

If you don't have a DS or a 3DS then I recommend this system but I don't think it's that much better than the others.

Buy It.

Below is a detailed editorial of my impressions of the system. Yes most of this is known on the standard 3DS so you may not get much insight on the system other than the physical layout and feel in the hand.

Physical body of the system:

First off, the system design and shape is pretty good with rounded corners that fit nice in the hand though the size and weight of it can be fatiguing to your wrists.

The color choices are okay, sort of like an homage to the old pokemon blue and red. It sort of makes me think of a male female color palette though.

Once you open the system you are treated to a nice layout with direction tab, analog nub, X,Y,B,A buttons and Select, Home, Start buttons at the bottom of the touch screen. The power button and lights in the lower Right corner of the control face. The R and L buttons are where they should be, volume on the left and Wi-Fi & SD card slot on the right.

On the display screen panel you have two weak speakers which I feel are not useful unless you’re in a very quiet place on the right is the 3D slider switch and the two cameras are on the back.

They changed the charger plug again making it look more like a large compact USB port. I’m wondering if they are planning to do other things with it.

The new stylus is nice and easy to use and fits nicely in the system.

It has a mic on the lower right of the touch screen and possibly one on the back of the display screen next to the two cameras

Firmware OS & built in Apps:

The OS boots up nice and quick and all the controls from the touch screen to the directional pad and buttons respond nicely.

Everything in the OS and the built in Apps run in 3D as expected and has the same Apps as in the normal 3DS. That said there are a few issues I’m having with this version of the 3DS that I didn’t see in the regular one.

The display screen is beautiful in 2D but the 3D is a little off. I think the larger the display the harder it is for your eyes to adjust. You have to hold the system farther away to get a similar 3D effect to the standard 3DS thus making the screen look smaller anyway. In 2D mode however, this system is a joy. I’m playing Chrono Trigger right now and having a blast.

The Camera App is fun and the camera itself takes okay pictures though in 3D it’s really hit or miss as to how 3D it will look. 3D video is pretty useless and hurts my eyes. You can do some fun things with it though. Running the video backwards and changing the audio pitch. All of which I believe is in the original version.

The Sound App has a few fun little Bird mimicking functions and lets you record hours of audio on your SD card. You can edit the audio by slowing it down speeding it up and changing pitch. It also has a couple of effects settings for parakeet and others.

There’s the Mii Maker, Mii Plaza for StreetPass, the eShop and other crap.

It comes with a video sample called Dinosaur Office that is cool to watch but is short and pointless.

I couldn’t get it to connect to my Wi-Fi so I couldn’t use Nintendo Zone or Download Play. I don’t know why it wont connect either. It says that it connects but then just gives errors.

The AR games look cool but like with the camera App the 3D is spotty especially when you’re moving the system around.

Face Raiders and the same issues as above.

I find it funny that the 3DS xl Operations manual is heavier than the system itself. At 314 pages long it’s a freaking novel of an instruction manual.

I haven’t yet had a chance to try an actual 3DS game on it because it doesn’t come with any.

Fighting Is Magic Glitch Reel

By: Daisymare Mar 25, 2012 | 6 Comments

Developer Mane 6 just put out a bug reel showing off all the technical errors they are currently battling while trying to get this game ready for release. Some are quite funny.

Since this game is still in an early build there are many glitches to be worked out. That said, it is actually pretty impress just how playable this game is in it's current state. Below are some of the glitches that pop up from time to time while testing the fighting engine and the animation routines.

Bonus for you TF2 fans.

Two Best Sisters Play Portal 2

By: Daisymare Apr 26, 2012 | 2 Comments

This is an animated short of Princess Celestia and Princess Luna trying to play Portal 2 and the frustration of Luna being an idiot. Warning, lot of insults and profanity dumped on the Princess of the Night.

This is loosely video game related but it does require a gamers knowledge of FPS's and the Portal series.
