Pro gamer FnJimmy goes hands-on with Skyward Sword in the Nintendo booth. Watch as he destroys the first demo and has time for another.

FnJimmy and I headed to the Nintendo booth to play some Zelda Skyward Sword. You can choose the bird riding level, a dungeon level, or a boss battle. They only give you a 10 minute demo to keep the lines moving and FnJimmy had played a little bit of the combat last year, so I encouraged him to take on the bird riding.

Most of the people in front of us had tried the bird riding too, none of them seemed able to beat it in the 10 minutes allowed. Noobs... give that Wii mote to FnJimmy and watch him do his best Fred Savage from that one movie from the 80's...

Uhhh... No, the other one...

That's better

Yeah, he may be a n00b at FPS games, but FnJimmy was born with a Nintendo controller in his hand. Okay... back to reality... Watch FnJimmy rail the birds so fast he still has time to do the dungeon level. "Good job, Jimmy!"

FnJimmy had a huge grin on his face after that and wouldn't let us leave the Nintendo booth until I had recorded his takes. So here is the offical FnJimmy hands-on impressions of The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword releases this holiday season for the Nintendo Wii.

E3 2010 Preview Part One

By: jalexbrown May 6, 2010 | 6 Comments

Check out my first of a couple articles laying out what E3 2010 might look like.

I don’t need to tell you that E3 is upon us.  It’s that time of the year again where rumors and speculation run rampant; everyone wants to get their say in what the next E3 will hold.  I’m not going to take too much time to indulge in speculation, although I admittedly might throw a claim or two that is sheerly based on my own guesswork, but most of what I’m going to assume we’ll see at E3 is based on announcements made and things saw at last year’s E3.

So the big three: Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.  These are probably the guys you most want to see, because they usually set the stage for all the awesome exclusives.  And I’d say everyone can rejoice, because we’ve got good reason to believe that all three will be showing some slick exclusives and brand new things.

First, let’s look at Nintendo.  I broke news on Gouki about the Nintendo 3DS, and since it’s been officially confirmed, I see every reason to believe we’ll see Nintendo showing off their plans for the 3DS launch.  As far as what properties could be present at the 3DS launch is anyone’s guess at this point, but I don’t think expecting to see a new Mario or Zelda 3DS is too far out of the realm of possibility.  Aside from that we could potentially get a new Pokemon game (perhaps the rumored Pokemon Black/White) or a portable Super Smash Brothers game (they must know that the fans have been asking for it).  And speaking of Zelda, I’m expecting to see some Zelda Wii stuff on display as well, and possibly even some Metroid: Other M stuff since it got a pushed-back release date.  There is some speculation about seeing a Wii HD, but I have a feeling that no such announcement will come from Nintendo at this year’s E3; I think the 3DS will be enough from a hardware perspective.

Let’s move on to Microsoft.  Last year Microsoft unveiled Natal; this year I expect them to kick up the presentations twofold and probably put it out for demo as well.  Microsoft knows how skeptical people have been since last year’s Milo presentation, so they might take the perfect opportunity to comfort all of the Natal naysayers.  But Natal won’t really be the big fish in the sea, because that will go to Halo Reach and Fable 3.  Both of these games are getting a spectacular amount of hype, and much like Natal both titles have a fair amount of naysayers.  Microsoft, Lionhead, and Bungie will be a force to be reckoned with.  I’m expecting a campaign demo for Halo Reach (the only thing I can imagine since the multiplayer is already in private beta), and some sort of hands-on for Fable 3 (perhaps showing off the Natal features).  I also wonder if Microsoft won’t maybe have a trailer for Mass Effect 3 in store; I’d say it’s a strong possibility.

Out of the members of the big three, we really know the least about what Sony’s got going on.  With the exception of Move, most of what they showed off last year will be out by this year’s E3.  At least we can safely assume that Move will out for demonstration, and I’m sure Sony will be pushing hype on a bunch of titles that will use it.  I can imagine that we’ll maybe get to see a trailer for Resistance 3 (after the whole billboard deal was circulated), and perhaps even LittleBigPlanet 2 (a rumor, I’m afraid).  But there is a ray of sunshine in all of this: there are endless possibilities for franchises that Sony could take interest in revisiting or moving to the PS3, far more than I could consider listing.  So I guess what I’m admitting is that Sony’s show will be the most up-in-the-air, but I’m optimistic that they have some great surprises in store.

So I think that’s going to wrap up part one of my E3 preview.  Keep reading, because I should get around to getting some third-party speculations up before too long.  In the meantime don’t forget to make Gouki one of your stops for E3 coverage and information!

First Look at upcoming Wii Game Pandora's Tower

By: iorilamia Apr 5, 2011 | 6 Comments

Another great looking Wii game, that might end up another Japan-only release.

Nintendo released a short video for a new game, "Pandora's Tower". But that is about it, no real info besides a release date of May 26. Also it seems that they might have teamed up with Ganbarion to make the game (known for making several One-Piece games) The game looks extremely similiar to "The Last Story" a super epic JRPG that I got hyped for and never got any U.S release. Anyways, check out the video below and let us know what you think.

Update: iorilamia 4/5/11

"the game is centered on two characters, Ende and his friend Ceres.

The setting of the game is the Graecia continent, where in the kingdom of Elysium the harvest festival has begun. Ceres has been chosen to sing at the event, but as she takes the podium, beasts appear in the area.

In the ensuing confusion, Ende manages to find Ceres, but she's unconscious. She's about to be taken into custody by the army as a witness to the beast appearance. With the help of a merchant named Graiai, the two manage to escape to an isolated tower.

Ceres ends up being cursed following the beast attack. Ende learns that to clear the curse he must gather the flesh of beasts that live within the tower. He decides to try his hand at the tower."

PS3 Outsells 360, Wii

By: jalexbrown Oct 20, 2009 | 2 Comments

The PS3 outsold the Wii and the Xbox 360 in September, says NPD.

Yep, it's official.  Gaming news is dead.  This is my second article in two weeks referencing NPD numbers, proving only one thing: sales do matter these days.  While sales figures don't tend to make for interesting news, we - the gamers - have been deduced to number crunches ourselves, primarily concerned with which system is moving more units.  That's right folks; we're deglorified accounts in masquarade.

Anyways, the NPD numbers for September showed almost a literal flatline in terms of growth.  We're talking an increase of only $10 million in sales from last year, a small growth by any and all accounts.  Deglorified accounting at its best, for sure.

The most staggering fact involving this menial growth lies in the fact that the PS3 has officially outsold the Wii and the Xbox 360 in September; in fact the PS3 sold more units in September 2009 than it has since its launch month.  Most of this growth is to be attributed to the release of the new 120GB Slim model launched at the reasonable $299 price point, priced to compete with Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite, also retailing at $299.  So does this mean that Sony finally hit the sweet spot?  Well it certainly means Sony found a price where it competes with the Xbox 360, its biggest and only competitor amongst the core gaming market (sorry Wii fanboys; it's true).  Does this mean that Sony has officially found a price point where it can even compete with the Wii, which was still priced at $250 during the month of September?  Well, the verdict is still out; we'll have to wait for the October figures, which will factor in the Wii's dramatic $50 price slash, before we can say for sure.  Being a $299 Blu-Ray player/console-in-one certainly does make it a value this generation if there is one to be found.

The Wii, however - even in the month of September at the $250 price point - was only 29,000 units shy of the PS3, rendering it 100% possible that the $50 price reduction will allow Nintendo to make up those 29,000 units in October, assuming Sony doesn't gain even more momentum in the following months leading up to the holiday season.

So there you have it.  We at Gouki are glad to be deglorified accountants, even if it does mean running around masquarading as gaming reporters.

(On a totally personal note, I would like to inform the fine readers of Gouki that I personally obtained my PS3 Slim 120GB model Saturday, October 17th.  I'm enjoying it loads, and I'd suggest anyone interested in the PS3 check it out at this more-than-reasonable $299 price point.)

Tatsunoku vs Capcom Trailer

By: choke Sep 24, 2009 | 7 Comments

Review of the new trailer for the Wii version of Tatsunoku vs Capcom

So a new trailer just dropped for the Wii version of Tatsunoku vs Capcom.  Excitement abound.

First off let me comment on all the "awards" they show it won.  OMG IT WON BEST FIGHTING GAME AT E3?????  What exactly was it's competition?  No one makes fighting games anymore.  Did it beat some new Tekken or some shit?

I still have no idea what Tatsunoku is.  I'm gonna guess it's some animation company because I see some Battle of the Planets fuckers, giant robots, people with swords, and lots of characters with those creepy big eyes that dont resemble any actual race that Japanese animators love.   Oh and there's a guy who throws a shopping cart and I could see there being an anime series just about shopping carts because anime is stupid and they make series about stupid shit like that.  Or is that the guy from Dead Rising.  I wouldnt know because I hate video games.

Disney Universe? = Lego + Little Big Planet?

By: DragonKiss83 May 26, 2011 | 3 Comments

Here comes a new family game, will it be any good?

Up to for players can run around at once dressed as Disney characters, including Pixar.  You'll get platforming, puzzles, collecting, and fights.  The levels you run around in are based of of the movies like Monsters Inc, Alice in Wonderland, and Tron.  The game will have 6 worlds to play in with more to come as DLC.  To add to it as you play your characters gets new weapons to match their costume that can be leveled up, plus you can take weapons from enemies.

It will be kind of cheesy, but could be fun.  The hardest thing about family games is finding something easy enough for the kids and fun enough for the parent.  I've picked up the Cars games from Disney and they are decent, with the exception of Mater's Tall Tales on Wii (total peice of crap).  The Lego games for Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Rock Band have been ok.  But many of the family games are just cheaply made with a liscence on them to make kids want them.  What ever happened to the good ones?

X-Men Destiny's third character

By: DragonKiss83 May 19, 2011 | 8 Comments

And now for the last character you can use.

His name is Grant Alexander.

He is a Georgia boy who has moved to California and is on the varsity football team when he realizes he's a mutant.  As with the other characters you will be able to pick his base power and have it evolve as you play.  But from what I've read the character selection is mostly about background and personality.  You will have the option to basically have your character play however you want.  So the the answer to almost all of your questions about how does the game play is it depends on how you play.

Kirby is back, like way back.

By: iorilamia Jan 28, 2011 | 10 Comments

Kirby's Epic Yarn came out recently...they are already working on another one!

Wow...Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata revealed a new Kirby game is in the works for the Wii. Still no name for it yet but it is being produced by HAL and so far has schedualed release for this year. It goes back to simple Kirby games with a touch of old-school graphics ; in the end it looks like a GC game, but the gameplay looks rather fun. A lot of comments are speaking of how this was a game supposedly to be released on GC years ago, but now will be a wiiware download. What do you guys think of this? Anyone remember the original Gamecube version? Even though Epic Yarn brought us a whole new dimension of kirby and what he is capable of...this game is looking pretty...fun.

Black Wiimote and Nunchuk?

By: jalexbrown Oct 14, 2009 | 10 Comments

Nintendo plans to release a black Wiimote and nunchuk in the States.

Well, it might be the most exciting Wii news in a while - and that's saying a whole lot.  Nintendo announced that they'll be releasing a black Wiimote bundled with Motion+ on November 16.  The bundle is going to retail for $50.  The bundle is also going to include a black sleeve instead of the clear sleeves currently packed with Wiimotes.  So that you can color-coordinate, Nintendo is also going to release a black nunchuk to retail for the regular $20 price tag.  Unfortunately Nintendo hasn't announced plans to release a black version of the console itself despite the fact that Japan has already seen a black version of the console.

Here's to hoping that the States will get to see a black version of the console in the near-future!
