Is the SMART engine in Brink the future of FPS

Is Splash Damage going to change everything with Brink and their new engine called "SMART" ???

I first heard of Brink about a year ago. I saw the teaser for it and thought the concept of the island and the to factions feuding sounded cool. The teaser said it was coming out in Spring 2010. LOL. It's cool, good games take time. I always say delay it until it's perfect. Unless you're Gran Turismo 5, which I don't even know what the fuck they are doing anymore. Now there are karts ... wait getting off target.

Brink has had me juiced ever since I saw this video late last year. I told BatRastered that this is "the video that has me totally into this game." At this point last year we were Borderlands fiends. BatRastered way more than me. It was kind of hard for me to talk about a game that was so similar to Borderlands at first glance. I didn't think that, at all. When I saw the SMART engine working, I thought that we could do some really cool stuff with that. Check it out, Paul Wedgwood the Game Director playing in this video.

Now the first time a lot of people saw Brink was the CG trailer they released. I knew what was behind that trailer and if they were trying to say that is what it's going to be like when it comes out. Cool. Of course people were like "Yeah right, there's no way it'll be anything like that." Well I hope after watching the first video you understand why I think it will play like that. It's Hardcore Parkour FPS = HPFPS. WOW!

Finally it was time for E3 and I knew Brink was going to be there. It was one my E3 most wanted list top 10. Getting to play would really set my opinion straight. When E3 came around and I was on the floor talking with Ed Stern and actually playing Brink. I forgot about the Parkour stuff. I didn't get to see it all in the E3 Demo. I realzed this when I came home later that week. I didn't even see the jumping and sliding stuff. I thought. That was the gameplay element I was most interested about. Bongoboy had me going so fast through the demo; changin' classes, accepting missions, shooting Jimmys. It was cool though.

These next 3 videos are just straight forward gameplay and they are incredible. Warning God mode activated. First video = Zzzzz. The second video shows off some more slick jumping in combat and what some of the specific chracters classes do. The third video shows planting a bomb and defending an area the developer was trying to breach. To create a shortcut for his teammates.  Awesome stuff there. Looks very exciting.

By now you understand where I'm going with the combat and "Moving and shooting" concept that, Technical Game Designer, Aubrey Hesselgren speaks of in this next video. Brink is do out in January, right before my birthday. I hope it's going to be a good one. With videos like these coming out as we get closer, I am constantly walking around with a stiffy thinking about the SMART engine! C'mon! Sticky baum to ya garill!

Tonight Gouki.com editor GoukiJones was supposed to be pwnn some Final Fantasy XIV. Not writing a story about how Square Enix doesn't even have the right time of day on their news page.

Have few drinks, play a few games of Halo Wars and jump on the Final Fantasy for a few hours. Until your knees are so sore that you pass out from the pain six or seven hours later. That was the plan tonight. Just like the last three nights. But here I am writing this story because I don't know what the hell is going on with the FF14 right now. 

Some of the Square Enix forums that are managed by users and you have to be logged in and accepted in that group to even read. Are saying things like you have to download files off of another website. Red and blue and bittorrents and megauplaod. WTF is this? Why doesn't Square Enix have a fix for us. That's when I came across this piece of news from their website.

The Square Enix official news site about the FF14 reads the wrong day. It's only September 5, 2010. 

So apparently the servers are down now for emergency maintenance. This has also been going on since early AM. Allegedly.

Don't download no blue or red files off of megaupload. Wtf is a blue and red file? 

My big issue here is the Square Enix website. Can we get the date and time right? This is exactly what I was talking about in my other story about the beta. The Square Enix website is BASS ACWARDS. They have the date of Japan and the hours of the Westcoast United States. I don't actually know when any of that news is posted or when the updates are going to take place. It's impossible to get any serious or real help and I'm going to be paying for a monthly service?

Also I go to the Beta site and log in. It redirects me to the regular Square Enix page with your profile and all that stuff. From there I don't know where to go. I close the page and click the direct link back to the beta site and boom redirected the regular page. Am I nubfarm? Is anybody else completely annoyed by this? Please tell that this game hasn't been rushed out before Blizzard can announce the next WOW at Blizzcon. That would be ridiculous.

Fuck it. Now what? All units?

Final Fantasy XIV open Beta test goes live

The SSF4 Arcade Edition Japanese Blog has been translated. Here are a list of Changes for some of the characters.

Ken

 

Normal Moves
• Less recovery time on Crouching Medium Punch. He can now combo Crouching Medium Punch into Crouching Medium Kick.
• Improved the hit box for Crouching Light Punch.
• Target Combo hit box (Medium Punch into Hard Punch) also had its hitbox improved.

Special Moves
• Light Punch Shoryuken has 2 extra frames of recovery, but now does 120 damage. It did 100 damage in SSF4.
• EX Fireball can juggle twice in the air, so now you can get full juggle off a Light Punch Shoryuken into EX Fireball.
• EX Air Hurricane Kick can now be blocked high or low. Used to be that it had to be blocked high.

Other
• Is considered to be mid-air right after the invincibility frames of his backdash end.
 

Vega

 

Normal Moves
• Crouching Medium Kick start up is now 6 frames, which is 2 frames faster.
• Crouching Medium Punch and Crouching Medium Kick do less damage.

Unique Attacks
• More recovery time for Cosmic Heel (Down-Toward + Hard Kick, Launcher) on block.

Special Moves
• Less recovery time on EX Rolling Crystal Flash.
• You can now combo Crouching Medium Punch from an EX Rolling Crystal Flash.

• His Ultra 2 has slightly more startup time.

Other
• Is considered to be mid-air right after the invincibility frames of his backdash end.

• EX Messiah does less damage. It took off 100 damage in SSF4.

• When Ultra 2 (Big Bang Typhoon) is used as an anti-air, it won't fully connect, so it does less damage in these scenarios now.

• Her Fireball Kick (projectile) knocks the opponent higher up into the air. Now you can combo it into a Pinwheel Kick, for example.
• Less stun and damage on the kick part of the Fireball Kick.

Ultra
• No changes to Ultra 1, but because of the changes to the kick part of the Fireball Kick, it's easier to score knockdowns.

Other
• Faster foot speed, while walking towards and backwards.
• EX Focus Attack hitbox improved (this could be incorrect, translation was a little fuzzy).

Two full days of experience and ranking up. Also, tons of walking around aimlessly. What have I learned from the beta so far?

Sqaure-Enix launched the Final Fantasy XIV beta early this week and it was a pain in the ass to get in. Apparently, from my understanding, Square-Enix opened up the beta with like 10 different servers. Those servers filled up faster than FNJimmy trying to solve any random puzzle in Darksiders. I had no chance that first day. I didn’t even really understand how and what was happening with trying get into the beta. I think the problem here is that the Square-Enix website is all done in Japanese and then translated straight over into English. The site is crazy backwards sometimes. Also I feel like I’m logging in a 100 times. Two days later, I did get a code and I was in.

With the beta you can create and play with as many different characters as you want. Actually I don’t know if that’s true, what I do know is that I have made 4 different characters. The first character I made was how I imagined I wanted him before I got the chance to play. I chose Disciple of the hand, Alchemist. I had no idea that with this selection I would have no weapon and my main attack would be “throw stone.” Thank god this is a trial run. At this point I tried to learn about the settings, moving around with a keyboard and getting familiar with the controls. I did a few quests, the levequest stuff is cool. So after playing for sometime and only doing 1 hit point of damage, I knew something was wrong and started my second character.

Disciple of war, Archer. Now I’m railin’ right out of the box. Gone are the days of gathering stones to throw at Nutbiters and here we go with 40+ hit point, crushing arrow blows to your dome. So now I got some combat under my belt for reals this time. I realize I just needed a little money and I could go buy any weapon I want. Once I buy a new weapon I can change my class. Buy a polearm, become a lancer. Buy a sword, become a gladiator. This also works with the crafting. Buy a sledgehammer, become a goldsmith. So yeah, you can start the game as any class you want. Now I can get my alchemist and get him a wand so he can start casting some magic. 

Before I switch back to my original character I created. I made another character and started him in a different city. I chose for this Jimmy to be a Thaumaturge. Yea, I know the names of the classes are a little ridiculous in FF14. Thaumaturge means black mage in normal talk. I also picked a human male this time. Previously I had chosen the little Lalafell Jimmy and an Elf. My human mage started with high and equal HP/MP. Cool. He also dealt major solo damage. I didn’t want to play has a mage in this game, but I may level it secondary. 

So now I think I understand the leveling, the controls and the questing. I start a third character, with a class I wouldn’t usually choose and in the third and final city. Disciple of war, Lancer. This city Ul’dah, is a city of bricks. One of the regrets I had in Final Fantasy XI was I chose the “castle city” in that game and I felt like I was in prison. So I don’t like Ul’dah in Final Fantasy XIV and I won’t choose this city. That’s official. I took my lancer out and killed a few things, got some gil. Final Fantasy money for you nuabs. Went back to town and bought myself a pick axe. Time to learn about mining. Got a levequest and took off out the front door. It took me a while to find the mining spots. Eventually I and it was there I discovered the mining mini-game. I couldn’t find any technique to swinging the pick axe other than to just keep whacking away at at the stone. I’m sure there is some trick to it.

Back to my original character. I got tons of money from stumbling around town doing quests. Got some money from being in parties earlier throwing rocks at Star Marmots out in the wild. Searched the town high and low looking for the Jimmy who had the magic wands for sale. Bought a bow and some arrows too. I already have my alchemy tools. Which I couldn’t figure out how to do shit for crafting. Fuck it. Lets kill something. Used the bow and arrows, killed a bunch of wild beasts(actually cute little furry things.) Leveled my Archer to rank 5 in no time. Now I’m starting to feel the leveling addiction. Wait what this? I just switch my bow and arrow to my magic wand and now I’m a Thaumaturge. WOW! Now I’m hurling magic balls across the grassy knolls. We are rollin’. By the way in FF14 the mages can throw magic “balls.” It’s a regular attack and uses NO mp. Cool stuff. Leveled my Thaumaturge to level 4. 

The time has come for me to log back in. What will I do next? Trial and errors continues. Get ready for the Final Fantasy XIV release. Play it early if you get the Collector’s Edition. Don’t be a Jimmy. Join the Gouki Guild.

Just playing a simple game of Halo Reach until everybody in the room started to drop off 1 by 1. Oh wait, it's Kinect everybody. Stop what you are playing and update your system right now.

I understand a lot of people don't like to play Rocket Race and quit out right away, but some of us actually voted for Rocket Race. That's right, I voted for it. The game began to lag real bad, in and out of the selecting new host screen at least 5 times. People dropping off one at a time. Then my buddy disappeared and then I finally got the boot. My buddy who I was racing with, sent me a text right away. "Did you just get logged out of Xbox Live in the middle of that game?" I most certainly did and this is unacceptable I told him. I looked at the clock. It was just after 2 O'clock. My last bit of Jack was gone and I had lost count a long time ago.

When I tried to log back in, I was told I needed to do the update now. I had to exit Halo Reach and do the update before I could log back in. I clicked OK and the system reset and began to install the update. Then the Xbox had the nerve to ask me if I wanted the Kinect dashboard tutorial. No, I want back into the game I was playing before you kicked me offline for the stupid Kinect update. ESPN and $10 more dollars a year. I got it, I'm thrilled.

So that's what happened with the Xbox update and me. It was forced on me in the middle of a match made game. Awesome Microsoft. Way to one up PlayStation with software updates. Anybody else have this problem? 

GoukiJones discusses briefly how Brink has grown since 2009. Just two weeks to go until the release of Brink, we get another look at full on gameplay. Brink is looking to set a NEW STANDARD. If Brink fails, it could be the end of the FPS.

May 10, 2011 will be the release of Brink. Brink is developed by Splash Damage, who made 2 Wolfenstein games, Doom 3 and Quake Wars. Splash Damage has tons of experience making FPS games and whenever I hear Paul Wedgwood talk about Brink, I get real excited. Real excited. The first ever video I saw of Brink was the SMART engine walkthrough video narrated by Paul 2 years ago. There is no combat in the video, Paul just demonstrates how you move around in the Brink. SMART back then meant Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain.

Recently on Machinima interview Paul referred to the SMART engine as Smooth Movement Across Rough Terrain. (@3:17 in the video.) Now I'm just saying here, Rough and Random are two different things. I like the sound of Random more, Rough may not mean as much freedom in the game as I once expected. Granted, Paul could have just slipped up or forgot the name of his engine right? Or, during development Splash Damage just could not do what they wanted to do with the SMART Engine, so they changed the name a little to represent better. Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain sounds like I can go anywhere. "Rough Terrain" not so much.

IG Extended: Brink Interview w/ Paul Wedgwood (Splash Damage)

So you want to know about the Get Smart, The Basics. I'm not going to fully describe the video I expect you to watch below, but I'd like to point out a couple of key things that are keeping me hyped up. FYI, I don't care about character customization, I don't care what my guy looks like, I can't see him. The missions and tasks during the game look very exciting, I hope it's a continuous PWNfest. Being able to switch whatever your task is, will keep you thinking, what can you do next. If you look closely in the video you can see a few clips of the SMART engine and it is looking Badass nice. The bottobline is the SMART engine is going to shock people when they first play Brink.

Brink's got a lot of hype to live up to with me personally, I've been following the game since 2009. I played it last year at E3 and spoke with Bongo Boy Ed Stern himself. This genre is failing right now, there's no inovation, games and velopers are going backwards. If Brink doesn't show me something new, you can expect my FPS Hiatus. ModNation Racers before and after the update

ModNation Racers was updated this week with faster load times and shortcuts to make the game more accessible and easier to play with friends. Does it work?

Early morning August 4, 2010 ModNation Racers had an update. The update is gonna have all types of new goodies. 

Load Time Improvements - While there are still loads, you will see decreases in load times throughout the game. Yes, yes. Later I will discuss why this did not work for us.

New “Casual” Difficulty Mode - We’ve added a “casual” difficulty setting in the options screen. Irrelevant, I only race online.

Challenge friends in XP Series - We’ve added the ability to invite your friends to XP Races & Series. Now this has me totally jazzed, team racing!

No more “Hot Lap” Cheaters - We fixed a bug that allowed players to cut the track and post unbeatable times in Hot Lap. Hot lap is great to learn any map real quick and I love being able to race ghosts of myself and other lap leaders.

Get into Online Races Quicker - Along with improved load times, we’ve removed the online game room from the ModSpot so you can get into the race faster. I can't believe the game shipped like this. I was screaming and yelling during the beta that this was not right.

Improved Server Stability - We’ve addressed issues to improve intermittent disconnects that players were experiencing. Yeah it would be nice if the servers worked better for any game online. Hell if Microsoft had just upgraded their shit, Jimmys would still be playing Halo 2 multiplayer online right now.

So let's get into yea? This first video is from the night before the update. I know most of you familiar with this game have probably seen similar videos that make fun of how long it takes for ModNation Racers to load, but hey it's me baby. Watch.

Of course yes, that is me pwnn. Did you notice that you are 6:45 into that video before the actual race starts. What do you think of my Jimmy mod?

Had a few more drinks, a few more races and then passed out. I think I left all the TV and PS3 on that night. I don't know, I definitely don't remember now. The videos pretty much speak for themselves.

The next morning we awoke early like around 11am to test the new update. Here watch this video. 

So yeah actually crashes the Playstation. It may be more complex than that, but the Xbox never is. So I don't understand.

At this point I've had some coffee, fresh pots. BatRastered has logged in and we're going to play a XP race together. Now BatRastered logs in and gets into a race and expects me to be ready and the game hasn't even loaded yet. Hilarity ensues.

And then I fuck it up in the end. Oops.

Ok so finally we get it to work. I get railed. Lookin' like a nuab.

I wasn't too happy about that finish and I wanted to turn the camera off ASAP! Did you notice my little note at the end. Yes indeed return to the gameroom. The next game will start immediately, well if there is enough people in the room and after you wait for the 1 minute timer to run out.

Here's where we were having a problem. The game seemed to only load the same 3 or 4 maps and most of the time back to back. So if you were not paying attention, you could be racing the same race over and over. Even vetoing the tracks kept us in the same group of 3 or 4 maps. Finally I switched us to XP Series and that solved the problem.

ModNation Racers is a PS3 Exclusive. The kart handling in the game is incredibly similar to Mario Kart 64 and I absolutely love it. With this update you get the ability to race against your friends online competitively. Something Mario Kart has never allowed you to do this smoothly. Get on the PS3 Jimmy and race with Team Gouki! Check my PSN ID yo!!

Amazon relists the page the exact same way as before. November 2, 2010 is still on according to Amazon. Exclusive car DLC.

As expected Amazon.com has relisted the Gran Turismo 5 Collector's Edition. Last week they had pulled it down and most thought the item was sold out. 

The item listing is the exact same. The release date has not been updated either. Today I visited a Gamestop(employees didn't even know of the delay.) The employee told me that the release date had been changed to 01/01/2011. "The holiday season" as some stories reported also last week. 

What is the deal with this game? Is Gran Turismo 5 ever going to be released? What is happening?

Castlevania: Harmony of Despair updated

for the better, or worse...

Okay, so i just loaded up Castlevania: Harmony of Despair today and an update has appeared. this update changes quite a bit of balance to the gameplay. After experiencing the changes, I've decided to write down here what changes i noticed. Here's what to expect in this update:

 

Alucard

- Strength increase
- Damage increase for multiple weapons
- Yasutsuna (or should I say, Alucard's broken spamable weapon) has a slower hit rate
- Spirit magic does more damage
- Decreased MP cost for Hellfire and Dark Metamorphisis?

Charlotte

- Increased the cost of heal to 50MP
- Heal doesn't heal as much, making the astral + skull ring combo not as effective as it used to be
- Charlotte can no longer pass through flames when heal is used

 

Maria

- Decreased MP cost for all magic
- Slightly faster MP regen
- Increased Hymn damage
- Hymm deals holy damage
- Increased Guardian Knuckle damage

 

Soma

- Damage increase for some weapons such as the Muramasa
- Beserker Mail no longer increases the amount of damage dealt from offensive souls

Whip Users (Johnathan, Julius, Richter)

- Decreased the MP cost of all sub weapons
- Holy Water damage increased

 

Yoko

- Decreased MP cost for all magic
- Slightly faster MP regen?
- Holy Flames and Holy Lightning now also deal holy damage

 

General Changes

- Skeletons (dead players) can now backdash and slide
- Skeletons can receive loot from boss chests
- You can self fail a run by holding LB+RB+A+B+X+Y together for 2 or 3 seconds
- Players can join a room any time while in the lobby
- When searching for custom games you can now also search for the difficulty and chapter
- Robe Decollete had a stats increase and also grants faster MP regen, making it superior to Death's Robe
- Enemies deal more damage than before
- Miser Ring can now be found on Chapter 7
- Latency bar in the lobby actually works now
- Dual Crushes deal more damage

[UPDATE] This is what I get for being sick during EVO. Development has started. It's just a DLC update, could you imagine another disc? Fans would riot. Unless there is 10 new stage, at least 4 news fighters and maybe some new modes. Ha! I'm dreaming.

I don't know if this is even real. Ono likes to troll us sometimes. Maybe this is the update and the balancing that will carry  Street Fighter IV until Street Fighter 5 comes out. EVO showed me that there is plenty of characters to use, you just need to be good. EVO good. Here's the pic.
