Playable Boss Characters

Over the years, developers have allowed the gamers to play as boss characters from time to time in video games. Is it a good idea? Boss characters usually have a clear advantage over normal characters. Well, let's take a look.

What was the first boss character you were able to play in a video game? Was it a fighting game? An RPG, a racing game? For me, it was Goro of Mortal Kombat 4.

 

It was really the first time where I felt like had greater power for wielding a character of such magnitude. Goro!? The 4 armed fighter of Mortal Kombat? This was too good to pass up. But as later releases came out, even Shao Kahn was playable. How rediculous is that? A powerful emperor to be playable, can you say spam selection?

 

More and more games would eventually allow boss characters to be played. Street fighter is a prime example. Vega, Balrog, Sagat, and M. Bison, would be playable characters even before Goro and Shao Kahn. Bowser from The Super Mario became available to play in Super Smash Bros Melee, I remember how cool we all thought that was going to be xD But are developers doing the right call when it comes to making boss characters playable? They spend a great amount of time coming up with menacing ideas to hype up a boss character, regardless of that character's alignment. Fighting a boss character usually means he has very distinct advantages over most of the characters in the game. Normally, greater damage output, higher defense, more health, and a grand arsenal of abilities that you normally have to develope a strategy for. So what happens when they make that character playable? They tone that character down, nerfing his abilities. Of course right? Balance is what developers want when it comes to competition, but at the same time it almost diminishes the boss character's status. The near fear of fighting a boss character is reduced when playing against a human opponent because one knows the boss character's abilities have been toned own. In the end it comes down to player skill to really win the match.

But then again, who wouldn't want to play with a boss character, some of these characters' aesthetics are really detailed and elaborate. They just look damn cool. And over the years, developers recieved great amounts of fan mail requesting that boss characters become playable. So the developers did just that, but they needed a formula for a boss to be playable, powerful, but not broken. And in the mist of their creation, 2 versions of boss characters were created. One for competition and players, the other for challenging through the story, campaign, or arcade, depending on what game you played. Sometimes however, there were other powerful characters in a game, Secret Characters. These characters would clearly have advantages over many of the normal characters in a game. Faster and and more resilient, secret characters would share properties of normal characters to keep them balanced, sometimes playing the role of a long lost character or new character all together. Discovering the movesets or abilitites of these characters and how to use them to win is the main purpose of secret characters.

One of my personal secret characters was  Mewtwo of Melee. Sure, it was discovered that his abilities in the game weren't as great as say, Fox xD But Mewtwo was still considered to be powerful, why? Because he was Mewtwo, the incredibly powerful pokemon we all abused in Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver, Gold, Crystal, Ruby, Saphire, Emerald, Pearl, Diamond, Platinum, White, Black................oh wait, we're STILL abusing him. Mewtwo will always be one of y favorite characters for his awesome power.

 

Boss characters play an essential role in replability as well. Players enjoy becoming better in the games they play, but being able to play as the malicious boss character they just defeated and now earned the right to play as, with their own skill, is just simply put grand. There are, however, characters that have never been actually been truly enjoyed as playable boss characters. One such example is Sephiroth of Final Fantasy 7. Although Sephiroth was actually playable the games called Ehrgiez and the Itadaki Street series, has not been seen in any recent fighting games. Personally, I'd love to see Sephiroth and Cloud in Soul Calibur 5.

 

In conclusion, as of now there are many boss characters that have come to have great success in many games alike. It was a bit risky for developers, but they mangaged to pull them off. Among my favorite boss characters of all time are Algol of Soul Calibur 4 and Oni of Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition. Well the playstation 4 has been released. With that comes new footage of games that MIGHT come out sometime next year ... or 2. Here's a look at the new Metal Gear Solid game.

A Cassette tape? Really? Just on the sitting out on a table at the top of a lookout tower. That's incredible design. What about driving into the secured area & standing straight up. I don't know about these guards, but what are the guarding when they don't pay any attention. Just before he takes down the target, the target should be able to clearly see his shadow. Obviously god mode here, he's taking bullets to the grill left & right & is still running up to them while they are shooting him, to do some close quarters take down. Then the extraction chopper goes down. Could you have got on that if you did things right? I didn't get that feeling from this demo. There's a cut scene at the end of him driving away. Was there a cut scene made of the chopper getting away?

I'm just not seeing that next-gen tech I was looking forward to. The graphics are great tho! sigh. Cassette tapes.

Tweet Fighter 2

Street Fighter 2 meets Twitter.

This is pretty bad ass. Tweet Fighter 2 is basically Twitter with an pair of fists. For the first time ever, Twitting actually makes sense. No longer will you have Tweet something for nothing, you type in a keyword, your opponent gets a clenched fist to the FACE! The controls are a bit confusing at first, but typing in the right keywords nets you damage on your opponent. And while I personally prefer the real thing, this game is somewhat interesting when you see it on your screen. The competitive edge one has when playing a Street Fighter game surfaces as you scramble to figure out the keywords. As you begin, you enter your own made up twitter name and enter the other one as well. The fight then begins and the timer begins to clock down. Depending on the keyword you enter, determines the damage of the keyword. I think of this of more a mini game than anything else but nevertheless I think it's a fun way to turn your tweets into something productive for whoopin on your opponents rather than to just waste space on Twitter xD The game itself could probably be transfered to facebook and then we'd have something  probably better suited for us. Either way I find this program to mildly entertaining x) Give it a try and then see if we can match up!!

GoukiJones & FnJimmy talk about Final Fantasy XIV & other Square Enix games at E3 2013.

Murdered Soul Suspect was 1 of the worst demos I saw. Besides that Wolfenstein shit. Another freezing dark room packed full of Jimmys. I was literally holding myself up from falling over. Because of what happened during this demo I have made a new rule to sit/stand near the door of game I don't know anything about. I so wanted out of that room. 

"Excuse me, pause for a second." Then I get up & stumble out over 20 nuabs sitting on the floor. Dear god never again!

I'm super hype for the Final Fantasy XIV. I've been playing in the beta the last 2 weeks & have already logged well over 40+ hours. They did a really good job on COMPLETELY REMAKING THE ENTIRE GAME. Again I digress, BatRastered had the best take. 

"Isn't it just XI HD?" Yep.

Thief. Thief looked so bad during the press conference or where ever I saw that game play demo. Maybe the Keighly. The characters just running up to you to get smacked & the terrible, horrible animation. 2004 type shit. Pass. 

I played the FFX remake for like 15 minutes. All I watched were cut scenes with 0 skipping abilities. Fuck that.

Then there was something called Final Fantasy XIII-2 X3 4 Jimmys Lighting Returns. Ridiculous! Why can't Square let go of that horrible game?!

I am hype for that Final Fantasy XV tho. Even tho none of it is quite real just yet.

Bulletstorm, it's a game full of tasteless but extremely funny humor and one- liners. http://www.youtube.com/user/NormalDifficulty loved dialogue so much he created a montage of ridiculous and raunchy sayings in the Campaign. The video doesn't really spoil much and it's not that long either. I laughed my ass off during the single player hearing some of these lines and laughed again watching the video, is it funny to you or just tasteless stupidity? Leave a comment below , jimmy ;)

In Theaters November 21.

A few weeks back I got an email asking if I wanted to check out Micahel Ironside's new movie, Extraterrestrial.  The email emphasized he was from the Splinter Cell series.  So I guess that's how I got on this mailing list.  Super weird right?  So I replied to the email ... I'll check it out!

It's one of those movies about some kids that go up to the woods for the weekend to drink, smoke, & have sex.  Then something is going to come out of the darkness & kill them all off.  From the title of this movie, did you guess it was ALIENS?  No, not James Cameron style, nothing that original here.  Just your classic freaky grey tall strong self healing alien with big black eyes.

The latest video for FFXIV shows off some of the later dungeons in the game. They're not all dark in gloomy either. I can't wait to just queue up for random dungeons at some point.

MRD Beginner's Guide

 

Here's a look at how my systems are holding up running Final Fantasy X|V & streaming with settings maxed out. Check out my results in the 2 live videos I made plus a bonus look at BatRastered's score.

When I first started to download the benchmark yesterday, it told me it would take 3 days at 1 point. This game is going to get railed on day 1. I recently purchased a brand new laptop, hoping I’d be able to stream the Final Fantasy from different locations. As long as the internet was ample. Well I tried it from home today, where the internet is ample. Here are the results from the laptop. This clip is from the Twitch stream.

Now for the desktop streaming the Fantasy.

Special bonus, here’s what it looked like on BatRastered’s stream.

I’m disappointed with the laptop’s performance, but I’ll mess with the settings & see how it goes. If I can’t get it to my satisfaction, I may just send this Jimmy back. Too expensive for it to NOT do what I want.

*Update we have improved the performance on the Laptop, but running Xsplit at the same time maxes out the CPU.

Cliffy B just couldn't resist putting his face in one of those cool Bulletstorm videos. Demo date confirmed through Twitter. And finally the word on multiplayer and it's not what you would expect.

Bulletstorm demo date confirmed via @danacowley on twitter yesterday. January 25, 2011. We're gonna get the Echoes mode which is, campaign levels that you play solo and compete for high scores against your friends. I'm a little disappointed if I won't be able to experience some of the co-op. Either way though, I will be playing the demo and playing the shit out of it hopefully. Bulletstorm looks like a TON of fun.

In a new Bulletstorm video posted, not included in the Bulletstorm preview I just wrote two days ago.

Bulletstorm Weapons and Anarchy mode - Cliffy B jumps in to take up Tanya Jessen screen time. Sad face. So Cliffy B is all up this video talking about the weapons. I'm exciting about the weapons. I'd be more excited if Tanya Jessen was telling me about them more. Remember that feeling you got throwing the Perfect Dark suitcase gun up against the wall as a turret? Bulletstorm has me interesting in seeing what I can do with their weapons. They all have some very cool concepts and secondary functionalities. The main premise of the game is to just fuck up as much shit as possible at a time and see who can score the most points. 

So now we know, there is nothing traditional about the Bulletstorm multiplayer. There's PvP, but it's only for points. I don't think you will even be playing at the same time. Something similar to racing against your friends times on NFSHP. This is great, for that you can compete with your friends and you don't have to be online at the same time. I just don't think it will have much replay value. The hardcore Gears Jimmys are gonna be screaming that there isn't traditional multiplayer, but that is just not the style of Bulletstorm. Wait for Gears of War 3 ya Jimmy.

Borderlands 2 Axton the Commando build guide

Axton has quickly moved up my list of favorite characters in BL2, his turret action skill is quite good on its own, but with the right skills and weapons you can do the work of two players by yourself.

First the Survival Tree, I'm not a big fan of this.

You can see the relative offensive weakness of this build at about 4:45 in the video I throw a turret on each side of a basic loader, and I still have to kill it myself. I don't recommend the turret without the rocket pods. :) If you had 3 more points you could get the Scorched Earth rocket pods too. So with the 11 levels coming April 2, that's what I'd suggest first. If I did this over, I'd probably go with the rockets over the longbow just for the damage boost, but mag-lock without longbow is not very useful and Battlefront (extra damage when the turret is out for all your guns and grenades) is just so damn useful that I can't really recommend either version of this build unless you get the level cap DLC and get all 3 this build falls apart.

Now the Guerilla tree, the fun starts to pick up.

This is a good damage build with decent survivability. It allows the turret to slag, which is useful and will be even better in the upcoming third play through. The turret also has rocket pods and a shield. As far as Axton himself, he gets to carry 5 extra grenades and his shield will be recharging quickly most of the time. This is a good build that will only get better with the 11 new levels, allowing you to either add longbow and battlefront or get the twin Gemini turrets. Very versatile.

Finally we get to Gunpowder. NUKE!

This build is a great all around build as well, you still get the rocket pods from Guerilla and a good amount of defense, but you get a ton of DPS both from your nuke turret (basically an awesome, rechargeable grenade) and the use of the Battlefront skill. You'll note the Kerblaster assault rifle in the video shoots a projectile that explodes, drops a grenade and explodes again. This works with all the grenade damage boost skills too so this is my current favorite high DPS build. With 11 more skill points you can reach the slag turret too (double up, at the bottom of Guerilla tree) which will make this build very useful for the third play through. Also, nuking things is fun. :)
