AMD Radeon R9 290 and 290X Performance Analysis

By: guano Nov 19, 2013 | 0 Comments

PC component performance, heat and you!

The AMD Radeon R9 Series follows the latest trend in PC components having their advertised performance rated as an "up to X Mhz". You can no longer buy a GPU or CPU for that matter and have the rating on the package be the actual real world performance all the time. It's complicated...

For the sake of this writing, most graphics cards have 3 states of perfomance, which is also related to their power consumption and heat output. When you're not gaming, your GPU is in what I call, "desktop mode". It is a low power, low heat, low performance mode where you get maybe a 2-300 Mhz of your advertized 1 Ghz performance. It is intended to save power, so we lower the clock to draw windows on the monitor for tasks like browsing the web. This lowers heat, fan noise and power usage. We don't need to run full bore, so we don't!

Next up is, "gaming mode"! It is as it implies, the GPU runs at full power and speed to give you all the gaming performance you paid for... sort of. Every manufacturer has a different implementation, but the gist is that these modern chips will run as fast as they can, as long as they stay under a temperature or power envelope set by the manufacturer. So for example, NVIDIA's GPU runs at a set minimum clock speed and can throttle up to higher clocks so long as it stays under a set power or thermal limit. This is the third state that I call, "turbo mode". If you have better system cooling, you get higher clocks and lower fan speeds on the GPU at all speed steppings. This desktop, gaming and turbo mode model are the standard these days. My concern is the approach AMD took on its flagship R9 series GPUs.

The R9 290 and 290X have implemented more of a 2 stage approach. In gaming mode, instead of implementing a minimum clock speed, that will be maintained at all costs, at the expense of ramping the fan up and up, like intel and NVIDIA, they reduce their clock speed to maintain thermals, lower and lower. So there is no base clock speed. Unless you use an overclocking utility to override the settings, the 290X for example will not let the fan speed exceed 40% of its top speed, to preserve noise levels and thermals over performance. So if you don't have optimal system cooling, you get lower levels of performance, to maintain the thermals. This is counterintuitive to my brain!

If you do not wish to tweak your PC parts out of spec, for whatever reason, you should think twice about buying the R9 series cards. Without some tuning, you will not get the speeds in benchmarks you're seeing on the net. Most of the big review sites do not review GPUs in a closed case as you will. They have open system benches built for the convenience of swithcing out parts with ease. These issues the R9 displays are not going to be exposed unless thermal loads are real world. The R9 also has much higher operating temperatures. Their gaming mode temperature target is 90-95C. NVIDIA has much more efficient operating temps around 80-85C. The temperatures vary depending on the specific model. Fan noise levels are another consideration. Higher temps means more fan speed. The decibel scale is logarithmic so a few dbA higher can be much louder! You can read more about all of this here.

PSO2 Character Customization and new Gameplay Footage!

By: iorilamia Jul 26, 2011 | 5 Comments

Phantasy Star Online 2 finally has new footage!

The Phantasy Star Online series has had a strong following through many years and several versions. PSO2 has easily been the most hyped and excited version announced. For a while all we had was one trailer showing cool stuff like jumping and aiming with guns. Finally some new stuff is released, and all of it is amazing.

Awesome gameplay some new abilities

PSO fans, what do you think of this? The gun juggle looks insane and bosse can grab you O_O. The character customization has largely grown in terms of depth and some of the robots look like something straight from Evangelion. What are your impressions?

Akuma - The man, The myth, The legend

By: blazemanx Jun 19, 2011 | 5 Comments

a look into the man we call akuma/gouki.

Akuma is one of the most feared fighters in all of gaming and with good reason. I still remember seeing him for the first time on the 3DO (remember that system?) dashing in out of the darkness to kill bison and challange you to fight. Ever since then akuma has been quite possibly the most deadly warrior in all of fighting game history and here is a look into the man, the myth, the legend.

Akuma (known Gouki in Japan) trained under Goutetsu along with his brother, Gouken. Goutetsu taught them Ansatsuken (Assassin Fist), which is a mixture of karate, judo, and koppo. As the brothers progressed under Goutetsu's teachings, a dispute arose on the true nature of Ansatsuken and the path to master it. Gouken, unable to accept the violent nature of Ansatsuken, left Goutetsu to begin his own dojo. Akuma continued Goutetsu's teachings and vowed to use Ansatsuken as it was intended.

In order to learn Shun Goku Satsu, Akuma embraced the principle of Satsui no Hadou or (The Surge of the Intent to Murder/Murderous Intent). Through Satsui no Hadou, Akuma was forced to give up any compassion he held towards other human beings. In addition, Akuma realized his limits as a martial artist could be expanded, and left Goutetsu's guidance to train alone on an island (Gokuento).

His return marked the end for Goutetsu... Akuma demonstrated his strength by killing his former master with Shun Goku Satsu. Goutetsu fell with an inner joy, realizing his pupil was attempting to master Ansatsuken. Akuma removed the beaded necklace from Goutetsu's neck and placed it around his own. The following day Akuma challenged and fought his brother. With Gouken gaining the upper hand, Akuma was eventually struck down. Akuma requested death in defeat, however his brother was unable to kill his own kin. Akuma, sensing weakness, mocked Gouken and struck with Shun Goku Satsu. The dojo was filled with a burst of white light and Gouken was killed. Ken saw the flash as he was returning from the U.S. Martial Arts tournament. Rushing to the dojo to find it in shambles and his master dead, an enraged Ken ran into the surrounding woods searching for the killer. Akuma easily defeated Ken and disappeared. Gouken's other student Ryu soon learned of his master's death and began to search for Akuma.

Akuma first fought Ryu at his island, Gokuento, and discovered the potential within him. He destroyed the island and told Ryu to come back when he had embraced the killing intent. However, Ryu rejected it. Akuma now practices to be prepared for a battle with Ryu. He also killed Bison during the SF2 series, the only official result of that game.

Akuma fights only to test his strength and his opponent's. This means that he will only fight opponents that will provide a challenge, hence his refusal to fight unworthy challengers under any circumstances. Akuma will only kill opponents who are as strong as he, which is why he stopped his fight with Gen after realizing that he was ill. While Akuma killed his brother and his teacher, he did so in the confines of the code of the warrior, where the field of battle does not distinguish between friend and foe. Akuma believes he committed no transgression whatsoever. Also, with the exception of Gouken and Goutetsu, Akuma usually only fights those who challenge him instead of picking fights.

"Akuma" means "Demon" in Japanese. The kanji on the back of his uniform is called "ten." It can mean "sky," "heaven," or "beyond human." Akuma also has a few alternate, more powerful incarnations of himself including: Shin Akuma, Cyber Akuma and Oni Akuma.

Akuma is one of the first Street Fighter characters to really say "evil," besides good old M. Bison of course. Akuma's moves are of course based off of Ken's & Ryu's, which makes sense considering the storyline. In the later of the series, the manner is which he performs his moves became more and more different from Ryu & Ken... cooler maybe? Heh heh. Well, if you didn't know, Akuma adds in a certain "badass factor" to pretty much anything he does. He is an all around badass karate dude, if not THE badass karate dude.

I loved Akuma's 2nd Impact/3rd Strike appearance & fighting style, but honestly his SF4 incarnation disappointed me a bit... he's a bit too "monstrous-looking" in that game and his super moves just don't have the same pop. I think Akuma has looked his best in 2D form. In any case, he's surely one of my all time favorite fighting game characters (and I know I'm not the only one). Finally, Akuma's appearance in MVC3 looks downright epic... potentially his best... incarnation... ever.

Here is a little video I put together in tribute to akuma i hope you enjoy it.

So what do you think of Akuma? Let us know and don't be a jimmy.

Mark of the Ninja is the best arcade game in years. Recently I played the Mark of Serenity level & I didn't use the Mark of Serenity once. Check out these 4 clips from the live stream. Also we're giving away 2 codes for MotN on XBLA.

*All these clips below are from GoukiJones' TV Live Stream.

**Check out my review for Mark of the Ninja.

I don't know what got into me that day. Actually I do. [cough, cough] I thot it would be a good idea to try & mess with as much of Mark of the Ninja as I could. Trying to kill every enemy. This was especially challenging on the level where I didn't have a weapon & could not execute the execution. I am the excellence of execution Jimmy! I did it tho, everybody died. *New Game Plus mode [On]

Pro-tips MotN 101. You can throw unconscious bodies from high levels & the fall will kill them for sure. First throw that dead body at another guard, watch him freak out & in his terror back up & fall off the high platform. Then chuck the body he just saw right over the edge as well. Double!

You can also use the environment to set traps. In this video below, the baddies have a radar & are super sensitive to movement & sound. It's very challenging to fight these baddies 1 on 1. The hanging explosive devices & exploding hiding spots were perfectly to assist you in these situations.

Almost every game Ubisoft showed today was going to have a beta you could register for. You can definitely try it before you buy it with most of these titles.  That is probably a good thing since nothing really stood out for me here.  I was hoping to see something new that I could be excited for, but that didn’t happen.  I was looking forward to seeing Skull and Bones, but that game looked unfinished and not at all fun.  The best looking game was Beyond Good and Evil 2, buuuuuut even in the gameplay clips of this game it looks just like every other action beat ‘em up.  Around 6:35 you can see the combat.

Here’s the entire clip from the press conference for Beyond Good and Evil 2.

Welcome Uncle Sensei to the playable roster! Has DIVEKICK lost its "it factor" or should I say its "Kick-Factor?" This was something shocking and new ... months ago.

From DIVEKICK developers:

This is an image of Sensei from the New Angle Dojo stage (in Bel Air).  He lives there, but Dive and Kick have recently discovered that their Uncle may not own the dojo!  Is he squatting there?!  Is their esteemed Uncle, former 10 time world DiveKicking champion, homeless?!

You'll notice that Sensei has slippers on his hands.  He only wears these during times of meditation.  In combat, the same boots you see on his feet also appear on his hands.  Sensei is truly the man who took tournament DiveKicking to the next level for over a decade until his extremely salty retirement.  Will he have his revenge?  Will adverse possession laws help him legally acquire the New Angle Dojo?  Will he ever stop the over-sized weasel that keeps stealing his cigars?

Dragon Age II may be the best experience in front of your television since Red Dead Redemption. This streamlined sequel keeps you in the action constantly. No two play-throughs are alike, but let me tell you about mine. Tips, glitches and broken quests.

Dragon Age II is a different game for everybody. So much will depend on which class you pick at the beginning of the game. So if you pick a knight, then expect to get up front hacking and slashing away at the baddies. If you pick a mage, expect to die a lot. If you pick the rogue, it's either going to be slashing enemies with daggers or sitting back shooting off arrows of fire into a crowd. My point is, don't say it's a hack and slash. There is just as much strategy involved here. Don't pick the knight.

My character was a Rogue Archer and I was going to focus on being a dick. Gettin' paid for quests and killing whoever/whatever got in my way. I had a lot of lesbian sex. Well because I was a female Hawke. Female Shepard FTW! There is an option to import your saved game from Dragon Age Origins, but I nubbed that up and deleted all the info a while back. In DA2 though, I don't understand where any of that would be relevant. There are a couple of references from DAO and you run into Alistair at one point. But Anders and Alistair act like they don't even remember each other, that was weird.

The graphics are amazing. A lot more detail has been put in and the game no longer looks like a PC game on the Xbox or PS3, it looks like a Xbox or PS3 game. There are some absolutely incredible boss fights. The Ancient Rock Wraith is one of the boss fights in the game. (I don't want to be a spoiler.) Be ready for this fight: *Pro-tip - The little Jimmys that protect the Wraith will kill you faster than the Wraith himself. Check out this video. *Spoiler Alert.

Borderlands 2 Pro-Tip: How to glitch and beat Pete the Invincible

By: Arthvader Jan 20, 2013 | 4 Comments | Updated: Jan 21, 2013

Goukijones, Batrasterd, and I take on Pete the Invincible using a glitch to our advantage.

On Wednesday, January 16, Goukijones, Batrasterd, and I went and took on the raid boss of Mr. Tourge's Campaign of Carnage, Pete the Invincible. During the course of this particular fight, though, we ended up getting Pete into a spot where he essentially got stuck, allowing us to defeat him without much issue.
