Blinging out the EVO fightstick

By: BatRastered Aug 9, 2012 | 4 Comments

I recently purchased a limited edition EVO fightstick from MadCatz and decided to get it dual modded and blinged out with some LED buttons. Check out the results here!

Check out my new fightstick. I bought the limited EVO edition of the MadCatz PRO fightstick for the XBox 360. I'm a fan of the Pro model for it's shape and lack of screws on the top plate, but I didn't want a SFxT stick, so I jumped on that EVO stick when it went up for sale on line! Here it is before it was modded:

Fightstick Before Modding

Not a bad looking stick, I dig the clear case and clean artwork. The PS3 version looks better though with its all white buttons on the face. I can't believe MS forces the rainbow colors on the manufacturers. I wanted my new fightstick to work with both the XBox and PS3, so I had the stick modded by local Vegas pro Vicko, check out his site at VickoMods.com. He also talked me into getting a fancy LED board. Well, at the very least I wanted to get rid of those rainbow buttons and have them all the same color, so might as well replace them with the clear buttons. But, yeah let's do the LED too! The stick works great on both systems now, no switches either, it auto-detects and just works!

Here's some of the circuitry under construction:

After the stick was finished (unpowered) note the new wiring:
After modding, unlit

And finally all lit up:

As an extra bonus, check out this video of the stick in action:

Yeah, it's pretty badass, there are dozens of effects you can program into it, I've only played with half of them.

I highly recommend getting your stick dual modded... at $80 done by a professional, you can't go wrong. Way cheaper than buying a second stick and tons more convenient too! The LED mod is totally unnecessary, but if you can swing it, it will certainly make your fightstick stand out. Of course, you could accomplish that with some custom artwork too for a lot cheaper if that's your thing.

DiveKick hands on impressions from EVO 2012

By: BatRastered Jul 11, 2012 | 5 Comments

GoukiJones and BatRastered got to play DiveKick at EVO 2012. Read on for some hands-on goodness.

DiveKick started out as a great idea... Check out this preview video if you haven't seen it already:

That was an awesome spoof of the community, the games, the controllers... everything. 2 buttons, 2 characters. I thought it was awesome. It also looked complete (or at least very nearly). They could've sold this as an iPhone/iPad game no problem.

Since then, they've added a few new characters. There's a "wolverine" (not to be confused with the Marvel character) and a "Mr. N" spoof of Marn.

Now they're doing a kickstarter and even more characters will be added... each with slightly different jumps and kicks I guess. Yawn... This was so funny 2 months ago, but the joke is over now and I don't really care to have a serious DiveKick game at home. I don't see it selling very much at this point (let alone late Fall when it actually gets released).

Anyway, I had a chance to play it at EVO... here's me playing against a wolverine :

Is this the first double KO caught on tape? It didn't count as a round at all! Later on in the match I figured out that pressing kick first makes you jump backwards. My overall feeling though was that this would make a great party game and not much more. It has some insider jokes for the FGC, but like I said before, it's a bit stale now. If they take the game too seriously, they'll just end up competing with the SSF4AE and UMvC3's of the world and let's be real, I'm gonna play the full-on games at that point. I can't say I'm too hyped for this at this point... if it was already out with the two OG characters, Dive and Kick, and cost a few bucks I would've probably already bought it, played it, and forgotten about it. (Just like SFxT! Hey-o!)

Bonus video: Here's GoukiJones as "Dive" winning a match against wolverine.
