First and foremost I'd like to congratulate Infinite Bits for putting together an enjoyable convention experience on the first try. The 2009 Miami Video Game Convention
First and foremost I'd like to congratulate Infinite Bits for putting together an enjoyable convention experience on the first try. If you were one of the hundreds of gamers who took the time to go to the Doubletree Miami Airport Mart Convention Center for the event which ran from Friday Oct 23 thru Sunday Oct 25 you probably were like me and pleasantly surprised. Hopefully you didn't arrive expecting Infinite Bits to hand you an experience akin to that of the legendary E3. If you did ,then you were probably pissed. The 99% of Miami area gamers who arrived with an open mind and itchy joystick thumbs however, were pleased.
The convention had a nice structure and balance to it. There was something there for all gamers; old school classics for home and arcade, handhelds, table top games( think dungeon and dragons), as well as the latest home console titans. The mix of vendors were a little thin, but considering this was the very first convention sponsored by Infinite Bits all was easily understandable. Very hard to get adequate vendors when no one really has an idea of how successful the convention would be.I especially liked the arts and crafts that some artists presented....they were outstanding! Some of the video game vendors had unreasonable prices though...even for companies that are local and very small.
The convention was chock full of gamers dressed as their favorite game and anime characters. Gave the whole convention a lively vive. It took me and Jimmy about an hour just to walk around and guess what characters some of these folks were trying to be! That was fun! The tournaments rocked! There were tournaments for Gears of War , Halo 1, Halo 3, Street Fighter IV, and Madden 2010 as well as a host of other games. My only hope is next year they do a better job with scheduling the tournaments. Too many were going on at the same time, not enough equipment to have the process go quickly,(the brackets for street fighter were crazy long!), and definetly not enough space for fans(and the press like Gouki.com) to watch.
All in all I enjoyed myself...and if you didn't bother to go you lost out! Hopefully Infinite Bits can learn from the few mistakes they made this year and do it again next year bigger and better! I'll be there for sure! Check out my Iphone videos Jimmys!!!!! Remember these videos are from my iphone on the go live at the convention Jimmy so don't expect HD..but expect me to keep it real! Enjoy!!!

Fuckin' a!!! I'm going!
C'mon ... I'm not gonna miss this. This is great for Miami and I will definitely support it. 3 days of tournaments and games and Jimmys with fight sticks. Infinite Bits is going to feature an interactive video game museum. Classic arcade machines will be available. Panels with industry experts. (Am I hosting a panel? It'd have to be 18+ and over with an open bar). Live music from video game bands. A costume contest for the super video game nerds. Stand-up comics and live shows.
I can not wait for this. I hope it does very well and this is the first of many to come.
Visit their website and sign up for a 3-day pass your frickin' noob!
Infinite Bits is Miami's first ever video game convention. Check out my videos, pictures, and review.
We arrived in the afternoon and obtained our press passes along side the Destructoid.com Jimmys. The convention was pretty slow at this point the video game nerdom had not arrived, most were probably still in school. We cruised through the vendors area which was small, but had a very nice selection. A lot of old school games and consoles. Imports too and one guy had a bunch of material from the Tokyo Game Show so that was a little treat for me. Checked out the rest of the show which was about the size of the Nintendo booth at E3. The interactive gaming museum was cool. I saw my first ever console the Intellivision that was awesome! What I loved about this area was all the TV's matched that era of the console, I have seen such old ass TV's in a long time. My first gaming TV was black and white and you turn the clicker to change the channel.
This was the highlight day for me. All the major tournaments were going down. The only issue I had with this was it seemed that nobody cared how they were being handled. It seemed that two different groups were doing the tournaments. There were no announcements over the loud speaker of when or where a tournament was starting or that the finals were taking place. The finals should have been on the main stage or on a big screen for everyone to see! This is a video game show and this was not a highlight?! Wtf? The music on the main stage was so loud the Jimmys playing in the Gears of War 2 tournament couldn't even communicate with each other. I was annoyed as fuck during all of this. I just wanted to enjoy some pwnn ass gaming. The Street Fighter IV tournament was on 1 TV and took almost 5 hours for them to run through 18-20 Jimmys. Infinite Bits should have recognized the tournaments more and took it serious. Five years from now at Infinite Bits 2014 they should be talking about who won the tournaments in the previous years. Not trying to remember what fly by night band was playing horrible music.
This was a snoozer. Nobody was there and I ended up spending more time at the bar. I brought a professional Madden player in to compete in the Madden tournament. The entire way to the convention he was bitching at me, why I was dragging him there on Sunday when the Dolphins play at 1:00pm. Well I didn't put two and two together until I got there and nobody was there and the Madden tournament was cancelled. Why?! Because it was a football Sunday in a football town the team played at 1:00pm. That was bad planning.
Overall Saturday was the best day. I think the convention was pretty good for the first one in Miami and for the hosts trying to do something different. More publicity was needed, every time I talk to a gamer I ask if they were at or heard of Infinite Bits and nobody knew. You gotta hit up these schools especially the ones within walking distance of the show. CampGamestops and post fliers. The website hasn't even been updated since the show. No pictures or videos, nothing. I wish the tournaments got more exposure and the music wasn't so loud. I'm looking forward to Infinite Bits 2010. Don't be a Jimmy! Check out my video and the other videos on Gouki.com from Infinite Bits 2009.
