MMO Report #1: Do MMOs Need Stories?

By: jalexbrown Nov 18, 2011 | 2 Comments

In MMO Report #1, Jalexbrown discusses The Old Reublic, its story, and rather or not it's needed.

It's seems like everyone's been talking about the same thing lately.  With The Old Republic's release date looming around the corner, the topic of discussion is rather or not its story-based progression is going to wipe every other MMO off the map.  And it really does bear the simple question: Is story the element that's been missing from MMOs since their inception?

In the early days of MMOs there was very little in the way of story.  Dialog with NPCs, if you paid attention to them, served to establish a certain amount of lore and backstory regarding the world and its people, but players were in charge of defining their own character's motives.  A lot of this was due to developer restrictions; nobody knew at the time how to present a compelling story in a multiplayer environment.

So we all know that The Old Republic promises to change all that, and I can vouche that it's absolutely true.  The Old Republic does include a compelling story; in fact it has many different compelling stories depending on your class choice.  It's an amazing experience in all honesty, and I wasn't the least bit disappointed with the quality of the story presented.

On the other hand I couldn't help but think: "Is this really what we've been missing?"  The question has to be asked at some point, really.  How much is the story adding to the overall experience?  Well, I regretfully say that, awesome as The Old Republic might be, the story doesn't make for a better MMO.  What The Old Republic is, however, is a great single-player RPG where you happen to be surrounded by lots of other players.  The story's linearity irked me until I stopped thinking about the game as an MMO.  Was I immersed in the story?  Sure...once I stopped thinking about the game as an MMO.

So is this an MMO for the single-player crowd, or is it a single-player game for the MMO crowd?  It's a little bit of both.  Unfortunately I think it'll satisfy neither the single-player gamers wanting a single-player game nor the MMO gamers wanting an MMO.

So where does that leave story in the grand scheme of things, then?  Is it the future of the MMO genre?  I think so, but I think it's only a part of the future of the genre.  The notion of stories in gaming will have to evolve in a way that really fits the MMO genre and isn't just a single-player story pidgeon-holed into an MMO before it feels like a true evolution.  As it stands now, it just feels like a cross-breeding experiment - a damn good one, but a cross-breeding experiment nonetheless.

Star Wars The Old republic, this'll be a great movie ...

By: DragonKiss83 Jun 6, 2011 | 3 Comments

seriously it's a game? Where the fuck is the game play then?

The video looks good and I've enjoyed the character class reveals they have given us.  But are we buying a movie or a game?  Why at E3 would you not show how good the game plays?  The pre E3 videos were better.  But it is a Star Wars game so it would sell like crazy with a black box without a picture because of the army of fanboys out there.  But not even a release date, what a load of crap.  Come on guys.

Not the E3 video

I'll add the E3 video when they upload it.

Here it is, not the official one yet.

How much longer do you think they will drag this out?  Will we be seeing it again at E3 next year?  I want it to hurry up and get on the PC so they can port it to a console for me.

STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™ - Classes - The Bounty Hunter

From YouTube:

Both infamous and anonymous at the same time, Bounty Hunters are far more than mercenaries for hire—they're heirs to a professional legacy—an ancient brotherhood with a glorious history. Tracking elusive targets across multiple star systems requires expertise, especially when the targets can be prominent, powerful, and often prepared for confrontation. Thrill seekers from all walks of life set out to become Bounty Hunters, but only the most hard-boiled survive in this competitive and deadly business.

You can download this video from the official STAR WARS™: The Old Republic™ website:

Special briefing and hands on gameplay experience at E3 2010. Behind closed doors with the developers. Tons of gameplay footage.

LucasArts invited us inside they're private room on the third floor of the Los Angeles convention center to see Star Wars The Old Republic. Oh boy I could barely contain myself, I frequenting my pocket libation while waiting in line. We packed into a small room with like 30 other Jimmys. They showed the new Hope trailer, that just premiered at E3. I hope you've seen this by now. It's totally bad ass, but the game does not look like that.

The game looks just like I remember Knights of the Old Republic. Knights of the Old Republic is one of the best RPG's ever made. I played through the game three times. Classic Star Wars good and evil decisions made the game one of the most memorable experiences ever. I expect the same from The Old Republic. Check out this press release video given to us at E3 from LucasArts. This is the combat of Star Wars The Old Republic.

Back to the developer chat. After we watched the Hope trailer and the guy re-caped on the personal spaceships and customization options, he moved onto level progression. This is exactly what an MMO is all about. Having a bad ass dude, decked out with all this hardcore gear. The clip starts off with some lonely Jimmy barely dressed to go outside. All he has is a blaster for a weapon. The next clip, a few levels up, shows him with obvious suit upgrades and he can now shoot a little missile out of his hand. Then skip to a higher level and he has tons of armor, there's a "get over here" Scorpion style hook he shoots out and drags enemies closer. Then finally maxed out, the Jimmy is flying around, shutting down Jedi, shooting rockets from his back. Totally frickin' awesome. I only hope this game does come out before FFXIV. I still can't make up my mind.

Then we were taken to another room where BatRastered, FNJimmy and myself got some hands on time with the game. As soon I figured out how to skip the cutscenes ... oh and move, I was outside looking for a fight. Didn't take long for Jimmys to start shooting at me. I shot back. I win. I have a rocket up my sleeve. I found BatRastered out in the field, surprise FNJimmy still hasn't made it out of the town yet. I didn't know what to do, so I just followed BatRastered around shooting at people. I did get bored of it while standing there. I know that no matter what I did, it was just a taste. I didn't know what I was doing anyway. It was my first time playing Star Wars The Old Republic.

Irrelevant. This game is on the top of my Most Wanted list.
