EVO 2010 "Rockin Shenanigans" wrap-up

First EVO ever for Gouki.com and honestly I was overwhelmed from the get go. I'll never forget my first Super Street Fighter IV EVO world championship.

Day 1 at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas for EVO 2010 fighting game world Championship. Like I said, this was my first EVO and I had no idea. I knew there was going to be a lot of Jimmys there, but 1700 just for the Street Fighter IV tournament. Holy Macarole! Gouki.com had one rep there in the tournament, Nififf [Chun Li], who placed just outside of the semi-final pool. He only need to win 2 more fights(I may be incorrect,) then survive a Daigo showdown and he would have been in the Semis. Day 2 was all about the Semi-finals. I watched every single match, from the comfort of my own computer chair. I didn't make it out the second day, but that doesn't mean I missed anything. The announcers are quite entertaining.

And I quote ...

"Gamer Bee is rockin' Adon!" and "Mike Ross is rockin' Honda"

"Rufus coming out with some immediate shenanigans." and "Looks like Ken is lying low with some muted shenanigans."

Seriously great stuff, the announcers are very knowledgeable and fun to listen to.

As far those actual semi-final match ups. Amazing stuff. Only one really off beat character and that was Gamer Bee [Adon]. Really super fun to watch his Adon. Honda and Gouk are boring to me. Even worse is the none jumping, constant fireball chucking, boring ass Ryu played by Daigo. Rufus, Ryu, Honda and Chun Li were the main fighters that everyone seemed to use. Isn't there like 35 characters in the game. Maybe something is wrong here. I didn't see one Street Fighter 3 character the entire 3 days of EVO.

Day 3. The day of the grand finals. I woke up early and watch some of the Melty Blood finals on the stream. That looks like a cool fighter, from 15 years ago in some hidden arcade in Japan. Doesn't make it a bad game, just seems out of place. After that I watched to see if that stupid octopus had predicted the winner of the World Cup. Guess what he did. Germans should fucking throw that thing from their tallest building. J/K I love animals and stuff.

I finally arrived at EVO on Day 3 right at the end of the Tatsunoko VS Capcom finals. I stood in the back and watch the big screen from there. The crowd was going crazy. I don't know too much about TvC, I do know I want to play it more. The gameplay and level of competition at EVO for it was incredible. The game looks amazing. While I was lost in the thought, the match ended. The TvC tournament was over. Jimmys sitting down in the crowd started to move around and shuffle. I made my move to the front to get some good seats. 10 rows back from the main screen Jimmy! I smell Justin Wong eating cookies he had stuffed in his pockets. FNJimmy showed up a few minutes later and Nififf was behind him.

Now it was time for the SSFIV women's invitational. The worst part about this was the obnoxious fucks behind me constantly screaming out nonsense. Who the girls should pick, how they should fight, and when to do the ultra. Maybe I can't speak for everyone else, but I'm pretty sure the four female finalist would probably kick my ass at SSFIV. I'm also pretty sure that the Jimmys sitting behind me, shouting obscenities at the stage would get their ass kicked as well. Throughout the night these Jackasses continued to show no respect to anyone on stage and just embarrass the community. Reh-tards!

We got through the Street Fighter II HD remix pretty fast, I think took a shit during this one. Tekken 6 is where it really started to take a dive. Now Tekken 6 has like 40+ characters, during the grand finals I only saw five. Law, Steve, Julia, Lars, and a fat American named Bob were the only characters used in the finals. I think I saw Bryan Fury once, maybe. It was like watching the same match over and over. On top of all of that, Tekken 6 fights go to best of 5. I'm halfway through my flask of whiskey at this point. Best of 5 per fight and then best of 3 per match. So imagine that Law Vs Steve fight for the fifth time going all 3 fights and it comes down to the last round. I really had no idea what was going on at this point, I was running out of whiskey.

The producer of Tekken 6 then came on stage and called out the producer of Super Street Fighter IV. The two, with the help of a translator(that couldn't pronounce EVO) exchanged in some Japanese banter which for the most part seem to only confuse and upset the crowd. After that it was time for the Marvel VS Capcom 3 exhibition. They brought Justin Wong on stage and a few other big name Street Fighter players to do an exhibition. I watched one fight of this and decided to go for a walk. Jimmy and cruised the Forum Shops at Ceasars, the scenery there is amazing.

The time has finally come. We had been sitting there for the better part of 6 hours that day waiting for the Super Street Fighter IV EVO 2010 World Championship. A lot of things are blurry to me at this point so please bare with my recollection.

Here we go again with the same five characters. Ryu, Chun Li, Honda, Akuma and what's this another Japanese game with a fat American ... RUFUS! Now I hate Ryu, properly used he can just sit back and wait for you to come at him or just bury you with fireballs. Daigo is a master at that. Sad face. Bored. Rufus did seem to have a slight advantage on getting over RYU, but that didn't stop Daigo from going to the Championship round with no losses. Gamer Bee[Adon] as I mention early was incredible to watch and made quick work of most devastating Hondas. In the end though Gamer Bee could not defeat the Mike Ross Honda and Gamer Bee was eliminated. I think.

Anyway, Fruity Ricky ... I mean Ricky Ortiz, is there some debate whether this guy is gay or not? He waved to the crowd with BOTH HANDS. Gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that. For a gay guy by the way he raips at Street Fighter. Ricky did get the biggest pop of the night from the crowd when he defeated the Korean player Infiltration to advance to the finals. So it's Fruity Ricky VS Daigo the Cheese Beast in the grand finals. I believe it had to go 3 out of 5, but I lost count quickly. Ricky put up a good fight, but in the end Daigo just did what he does best. He sat back and waited for Ricky to make his move and Daigo pressured him. It didn't even go 5 matches. Daigo won 3-1. The crowd was extremely disappointed. I wasn't, I kinda saw this coming. A Japanese player who uses the safest character in the game, a game made in Japan ... beat a fat American(Rufus) in his own country. So congratulations to Daigo for winning EVO 2 years in a row. Let's see how you(Daigo) do in the first ever Japan EVO in September.
