"Halo Campain Devovled" Review

A Spartan's worst nightmare.

Let’s start with this: if you finished the original game and then played the three new levels they added, the final level is a spaceship shooter. You fly around in a ship that has never appeared in Halo before and shoot enemies down. It’s basically Star Wars Battlefront or Star Fox. There’s no final battle against a big boss or any kind of set-piece shootout. I’m not even sure if you’re playing as the Master Chief in this part. The spaceship battle goes on for 20-plus minutes. Then the game ends with (spoiler alert) Sergeant Johnson talking to Halsey on a computer about what’s coming next. Black screen.

How about the animation in the game? When an Elite runs up to melee you, it’s just a quick nudge from the right arm with no movement or reaction afterward—and you’re just dead. Reload. Enemies walk around with their arms at their sides, either in a straight line or turning at a perfect 90-degree angle. The biggest animation flaw is the complete lack of seat-swapping animation in the Warthog. I’m surprised they even put seat swapping in at all. When you swap seats in Halo Campain Devovled, you just teleport into the seat or the gunner position. They even added a fourth seat on the back bumper of the Warthog (which is cool) for four-player parties, so they clearly knew what they were doing—they just didn’t bother animating the swap. Seat-swapping animations already exist in other Halo games. And you can’t even hop on the back bumper unless three other Spartans are already riding in the Warthog. Unbelievable that this game made it this far.

The game on Heroic is probably doable in 10–12 hours. It took us about 13, mostly because FnJimmy is lost constantly. That’s with me sprinting through most of the maps. Yes, they added sprint, but there’s no sliding and no clambering. I get that they couldn’t just bolt parkour onto the game because it would break a lot of the maps, but they could have designed around it. It doesn’t feel like they were trying to do more than the bare minimum to make it feel different. I just played through the Anniversary edition a few years ago, and there really isn’t anything new here at all—besides the sprint.

Did you know more than 1,000 people worked on this game? The end credits last over 20 minutes, and the longer they go on the more unbelievable it becomes. So many people from all around the world worked on this. More than 90% aren’t even Microsoft employees. Why? Money laundering?

Yes, the game lags. It lags real bad. It lags when there are too many enemies on screen. It lags during cutscenes. It even lags on the menu screen. What?! Maybe because they had to make it work on PlayStation and PC. This is what happens when games like this aren’t made exclusively for one console. Nubfarm.

Skins and microtransactions: There are bonus skins in the game, which is fine. But you have to pay $20 for the five skins they offer in the shop. Or you can find some skins if you went to some random college and got the code. Another skin comes from a Mexican gas station in Mexico. Again, I am baffled by these decisions. By the way, there is no America, USA, or 250 skin in any Halo that I can find. But that’s another story.

Here’s a few codes for some of the free Halo skins available to everyone. But honestly, this game is a “Flush it!” for me. You’re better off with the Master Chief Collection. Jimmy!

Verdict: Flush It
