About: Borderlands (x)

The third DLC expansion for Borderlands is out. How does it stack up?

Here we are with another review of another Borderlands DLC, and I feel like I'm repeating myself becuase Gearbox has a habit of releasing great DLC that is marred by one or two flaws.

In the last DLC (Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot) there were some issues with the tournaments just being to long and the font colors in the bank just being damn unreadable (purple on orange?).

This time around we get great new features like new cars (but you can't use them in the old maps and they're still fragile as hell to enemy gunfire), a new level cap (although the old enemies in the main game don't level up with you turning it into a cakewalk with no good weapons to find), new guns (though I've only found better versions of my old ones as the new, cyan colored guns are very rare). There are also quite a few "glitches" in this expansion. We've found more than a few places to fall through the floor or walk through a wall or walk into an invisible wall. (See video.)

The biggest problem is the lack of fast travel stations throughout the DLC forcing you to drive everywhere. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if the levels you drove through were all open areas, but they tend to be straight freeway driving. That plus the fragility of your ride means a lot of driving straight and not stopping to get where you're going. It's like a family vacation simulator. There are certain missions at the road's end that need to be turned in back at the starting town, T-Bone Junction. It's faster to save, exit, and reload to get back there than it is driving, and the driving offers very little in the way of "fun".

Having said all that, the actual game play once you get out of your car is still there, and there are some great new enemies to fight and they are definitely a challenge your first time through. I especially enjoyed fighting packs of Devastators (baddies in giant mech suits).

I'd normally give something with this many problems but so much fun a "rent" rating, but since this is DLC, you can't really do that, so I'll say this: If you have Borderlands already, this is a worthwhile expansion. Buy it. If you don't have Borderlands or rented it but didn't like it, this isn't going to make you go out and get it.

So, overall, Buy it (if you have the main game already).

New details emerge on the Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC for Borderlands

Confirmed

  • New level cap of 61
  • More backpack space
  • New enemies
  • New weapons
  • New vehicles
  • 800 MS points on XBL, or $10 for PC or PS3.

Straight from Gearbox comes this news on the new Borderlands DLC. It was rumored (due to the achievments list being released) that the level cap has been raised from 50 to 61. This is now confirmed. You will get skill points for these new levels and there are missions that will increase your backpack size (probably more claptrap rescues).

Some new enemies were shown including the Crimson Lance's assasins, fast moving chicks with swords who drop in on you ODST style in a pod (interplanetary ninja assasins?). Also, midgets riding on skags! To give you a fighting chance against these new enemies, there will be new weapons (as well as the level cap of 48 on the old weapons and gear being increased).

A new vehicle was shown which seats all 4 co-op players, 1 driver and 3 gunners, though the weapons will be unique (one person can lay mines, for instance). This is in addition to the "monster" truck which was already shown and the existing runner.

The cost of the DLC was confirmed as $10 (which translates to 800 MS points for those playing on the XBox 360). Still no solid release date other than "soon".

"Hey, Scooter says don't walk, drive! My daddy always said wheels were better than heels. Uh, he was paralyzed, though. Anyway, don't walk, drive!"

Borderlands re-review

By: BatRastered Feb 11, 2010 | 4 Comments

After spending close to 200 hours (!!!) on this game, what's still interesting? Plus new info on the Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC.

When we first got our hands on this game we played through it in co-op, beating the game around level 34. The second play through gave a greater challenge and allowed us to max our characters out at level 50 (the highest level until the new DLC comes out) but we stopped and didn't beat the second play through. We thought we were done and had seen everthing the game had to offer. WRONG.

Starting with the release of the Zombie Island of Dr. Ned DLC (see our review), we returned to planet Pandora (no relation to Avatar). While the Zombie expansion provided some new sights and enemies, we again quit playing once it was pwned.

Next came the Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot expansion (review here). This gave us a bank to hold weapons (finally!) and gave you a nice arena to test out any new weapons you've found towards the end of the game on enemies actually at your level. While this DLC was not without problems (purple text on orange backround for one) it did open up a whole new reason to keep playing... finding newer guns and mods and testing them out with different charcter skill tree builds. So now I can still play even for just to kill a few minutes by searching for loot, it is strangely addicting, but you should see some of these guns, Jimmy! Pwnn! When more time is available (not much since Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 dropped) I like to search for loot, change up my character's skill points and test out the different builds to see what works best.

I think I've spent a lot of time in this game and know all there is to know and have seen all there is to see (again) then I see someone post something like this and realize that some people must've played this game 3x as much as I have... Insane. This game is a cult classic for sure.

I'm looking forward to the new DLC "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx" which will supposedly raise the level cap and pit us against even stronger, armored enemies. (Sounds alot like Broken Steel for Fallout 3, which was my favorite DLC of last year.) They're sure to fall against some of the equipment I have now, but, being an "armory" I expect new weapons and gear!

Update: We still don't know what the max level will be, but it will be at least 61 as evidenced by this new achievment:

Borderlands what is wrong with Mad Moxxi DLC

By: goukijones Jan 6, 2010 | 4 Comments

There isn't much first of all. This basically is a $10 storage bank for your extra weapons. Especially the fact that they ...

Mad Moxxi Borderlands dlc

Who colored the bank orange? Did anyone test this? You can not read what the purple guns or mods are with that color background Jimmy! The other colors are hard to read too. There's no real reward for beating Mad Moxxi that I can see, except an achievement and two extra skill points which are meaningless at this point.

Getting into the actual Riot Arena waves is something else. It's fairly simple and fun to play. In an attempt to change up the repetitiveness of the waves there's a "roulette" type feature that pops up and gives you or the enemies different types of bonuses or negative effects. Number two problem here, at the end of every level there is a weapon and health drop that fall from the sky. Being in the right spot helps during this, you have less than 10 seconds to pick the stuff up. With 3 seconds left the "roulette" wheel pops up and blocks the entire screen, right as your run up to an ammo pack ... too bad you can't see it anymore. At 2 seconds left everything disappears. Bottom line here is the "roulette" wheel is poorly designed. Just be quick and look up in the sky for the drop. You have less than 8 seconds!

Why isn't there more detailed stats especially at the end of 5 rounds. It would be so cool to see like a critical count, accuracy, anything, get creative with it Borderlands style. I can't believe there are not in-depth stats.

Borderlands Mad Moxxi should have been $5. It is fun though and I've beaten the first set of arenas and will play the next three. Plus it brought me back to Borderlands, I just beat the regular campaign again today with my second character. Mordecai and Brick 4 life!

Thanks for pausing the wave by the way Gearbox, the worst thing about ODST wave battles was that you could not even take a minute to piss. Jimmys playing that shit for 4-5-8-100 hours plus, fuck that. Props on the break between waves!

I've spent $70 and over 80 hours on Borderlands so far and I'd say it was worth every penny! Don't be a Jimmy!

Borderlands is the King of invisible walls!

Understand first, that I love Borderlands! It was one of my favorite games from 2009 and I can't wait for me DLC. One night while playing I found the ultimate invisible wall! You can not believe this Jimmy! Believe me.

New Borderlands DLC Mad Moxxi Release date

By: goukijones Dec 10, 2009 | 7 Comments

Storage box! Is that worth ten bucks to you Jimmy? Or is there more?!

Mad Moxxi Borderlands dlc

So she's crazy right. She is in charge of the "Underdome" yeah, kinda like the Thunderdome. The game is cool like that, I'm telling you the truth. Basically my biggest draw is the new arena modes which promises to throw waves and waves of some of the baddest enimies from Pandora at you. There's also a storage box, so you can store some guns and stuff Jimmy. Also you get TWO yeah only TWO more skill points to level up with, but no new level cap and no information on how many missions or side quests.

The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned was excellent DLC and I got my monies worth so I'll be watching this new DLC close. Ready to go into the arena Jimmy?!

Borderlands: Zombie Island of Dr Ned Review

By: BatRastered Nov 27, 2009 | 5 Comments

Zombies and an additional 7 hours of gameplay for 10 bucks. Braaaaaaaaaaaains!

Borderlands may have been the surprise hit of the year in 2009. While I'm not a fan of paying for DLC so close to the release of a game, I can say that an extra 7 hours of play (co-op no less) for 10 bucks actually represents a pretty solid value these days.

There are new enemies to fight (zombies), though the main difference between them and the human raiders from the main game is that the zombies have no shields and tend to attack in swarms. (This make fire and blast elemental weapons particularly effective.) There are a few other new creatures such as the wereskags and some bat like creatures that take place of the flying rakk.

The new area (Jakob's Cove) is quite large, so much so that it was a bit dissapointing that you couldn't fast travel between the new areas that were in it. It doesn't appear that any new weapons or weapon types were added for this expansion (at least we didn't come accross any).

The humor from the main game is here, and is even turned up a notch with some laugh out loud moments when coming accross some of the characters.

If you enjoyed playing through the original quests, you should definitely pick this up, with the same caveat I'd give the full game; it's much more fun to play co-op online than alone.

Verdict: Buy it (or should I say, download it).

Borderlands Review

Leveling up and shooting Jimmys in the face is a perfect match for me.

After only sitting down to play this game only 3 times, I've already logged over 20 hours and have leveled up to 25. When the game says it has a bazillion guns it's not joking, almost every character carries a different gun and every time you open a treasure chest it has new guns that entire party scrambles to get a glimpse of.

Yeah the party Jimmy. This a four player co-op RPS, RPS means Role playing shooter. It's something new. Kind of like something people were asking for after playing Fallout 3 for a little while. Where is the co-op? Here it is in Borderlands.

The setting here is a distant planet named Pandora. More like a Mad Max type world than a "Capital Wasteland." The graphics are cel-shaded, yes Jimmys are still making cel-shaded games. The game looks cool, the graphics don't really make a huge difference for me. The gunplay is spot on, the menu takes a little getting used to and the driving takes some practice.

I'm really enjoying this game and I look forward to playing it. It's super fun and really ... any game that's multiplayer that has a solid party system that is easy to use and most importantly FUN. My final verdict here is an easy choice.

This a Buy Jimmy!

Borderlands Preview

A first-person shooter/rpg on a distant planet in a post apocolyptic setting. With a very unique art style. 4 player co-op ... Lets play this Jimmy!

Borderlands a new game from publisher 2k games and developer Gearbox who worked on Halo CE for the pc and just recently released Brothers in Arms and also worked on Half-life. This new game has a very unique art style it's cel-shaded but very gritty. I like it the colors.

As far as the gameplay, you can select from four different classes. A hunter, he has a sniper rifle. A soldier, he just raips on the ground level. A siren who looks like she has an emp and can boost the parties experience gain. And a berserker who just pounds the shit of things. So yes, a first-person shooter with experience gain. One of the first of it's kind. I'm interested and as the game's release gets closer, I've been paying more attention.

Check out these videos and do some pre-ordering. Gamestop is giving you a bonus weapon exclusive weapon cache. BestBuy doesn't have anything extra for the game.

This game looks fun as hell with four friends online, lets pwn!
