Final Fantasy XIV Online, is the fourteenth installment in the Final Fantasy series, due for release in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows.

The battle and job systems will be different from the one previously used in Final Fantasy XI, which utilized experience points and level-based progression. Final Fantasy XIV is being designed to utilize a skill-based progression system similar to that of Final Fantasy II. Character races will resemble and allow players to create avatars similar to ones in Final Fantasy XI. Group play has been de-emphasized, and now solo and group play have been balanced. Weapon use will alter "character development".

A new expansion (Ver 3.0), called "Heavensward" is due June 23, 2015

Finally, FFXIV getting a new patch 5.3 in August

August 11 has been a long time coming.

We've been stuck on the current patch of FFXIV for 5 months now (thanks, covid). Finally some more news about 5.3 is out and we have an official release date of August 11.

Patch 5.3, titled Reflections in Crystal, is scheduled to release on August 11th and is the ideal opportunity for new players to dive into FINAL FANTASY XIV Online. Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida announced that alongside the streamlining of the main questline of the original game, A Realm Reborn™, players new to FINAL FANTASY XIV Online can enjoy an expanded free trial experience which will include all content from A Realm Reborn and the Heavensward™ expansion—including the entire Patch 3.x series—up to level 60. The freely playable content represents hundreds of hours of award-winning gameplay and story experiences and comes with no limit on playtime.

Additionally, all existing and future A Realm Reborn players will also have access to the complete Heavensward expansion and all the benefits it includes.

Patch 5.3 also features many trials and challenges for veteran players to enjoy, including the finale of the Shadowbringers™ storyline, the next chapter in the NieR-inspired YoRHa: Dark Apocalypse alliance raid series, and more.
