Here is another game that I was super hyped for, but as time passed I got worried it would be a crappy game. So I held off on buying it, but thanks to Gouki.com I got to check it out.
Lets start this off by saying I am a big fan of Marvel. Unfortunately their games just don't compare to the likes of the Batman series. But when I heard that Marvel was working on a game where you were going to be playing a mutant coming into their powers I couldn't believe it. Of course I start thinking I'll be making my own character, wrong. Then we hear that you will make choices that affect the story, kind of. But as a true fanboy I had to give it a chance. And Gouki.com made it happen (thanks guys) and I'll be looking to return the favor to one of my fellow jimmys.
After a combo of a motion comic and a short video clip that give you an idea of what's going on I was ready to start the game. Like Goukijones I started with Aimi the asian girl. I did try the guys afterwards just to see how it affected the story and to use all 3 main powers. They each interact slightly different, but not enough that you really feel like their is a replay value.
After you select your character you get a little clip to fill you in on their story then all hell breaks lose as a rally gets attacked. You are then given the choice of the 3 power choices. And unless they add more by DLC that is all the choices you get, Density Control, Energy Projection, and Shadow Matter. I went with the third choice and after trying all the powers it was still my favorite. As you get farther into the game you get options for expanding your powers. Giving you 3 attack and a constant effect. Really lacking considering the wealth of powers available in the Marvel universe. The offer X-genes from a few mutants and they also come in sets of 3 to augment your character's powers. you get to switch them out and and can mix and match them. If you put a full set together including a suit that changes your look you get access to a bonus that in most cases is useless. All of these parts are random so you can end up unable to put a full set together for most of the game.
So lets get on to what should have been the driving point of the game, the story and how it changes. You get to decide on following the X-Men or the Brotherhood. This is done through a series of choices on side missions. Well to be fair they aren't so much missions as little battle arenas. You can help both sides in most cases with only a few times you have to choose between the two. This is when you will interact with the big names, and a few that are less known. But for some reason they half-assed it. You still do the same basic story either way with just a few changes thrown in. This was a major let down. Why put the time in to make a great game when you can sell it for the box and name on it? Well that fact that you have good games to compete with.
The game gives you almost no room to explore, you can look around corners to find x-genes and collectibles, but you won't wander far.
The first play through I went X-Men, then Brotherhood, then mixed them together. Unless you want a few minutes of face time with the other team the only other pay off is you get a pat on the back from either Cyclops or Magneto.
After you finish the game you can play a new game + using the same character with the same power and keep the stuff you gathered. Or you can start from scratch with a new character and basically get nothing. When you get to your second play through you will want to skip a lot of the scenes, but that just isn't an option. If they want to add to the game they need to patch that. Let's not forget that you don't choose when to save, the game does it on it's own at pre-selected areas. Many of them right before a long cut scene. As was mentioned before this is a very short game. In about 4 days i beat the game 4 times and unlocked everything. when you compare that to the nearly two hundred of hours I've put into Disgaea 4 and the amount of stuff I have left to do in the game it feels pretty crappy. Luckily the price is dropping fast and even better for me and one of you the game can come just for being a good jimmy.
I enjoyed the game some, but kept thinking about what it could have been. I'ld stick to renting it if you are a Marvel fan, or have a kid who is since my 7 year old was able to play it with very little trouble. If you really want to have it sit on your shelf wait until you can get it on Amazon.com or Gamestop for $10 or free as part of some deal. And trust me it will be there sooner than you think. Or you can comment on the story telling me how much of a fan you are and why you want the game. It is a copy for the Xbox 360 and it could be heading to you.

Choose your destiny with three different new mutants and powers. Brotherhood or X-Men? Featuring a ton of your favorite characters and an original story. Can this X-Men game do what Batman Arkham City did or do we just have another 90's remake?
X-men Destiny review.
In X-men Destiny you choose from 3 different mutants, who are all attending the same mutant/human rally at the beginning of the game. I choose Aimi, the chick. I don't like watching the dudes walk around in third person games, I'd rather look at some hot graphical ass. Let me tell you, there are a few shots -depending on which suit Aimi is wearing- of that snatch on this chick and its unPWNievable. Ok so, the mutant rally gets attacked. Everybody thinks Magneto is behind it. BTW, Professor X is dead and the school is gone. Cyclops and the White Queen are running the show. The attack happens, you're right in the middle and here we go. Different mutants start asking you for help, like Toad, Surge, Mystique, and even my personal favorite Gambit. Some are literally right around the corner from the last. This to me didn't make any sense in the game. You're up on the streets and Cyclops tells you to go look for Wolverine in the subway or something. You smash through the ground, take 10 steps and Wolverine is right there. Cyclops could have taken two seconds and came down there with me, I did all the hard work of smashing through the street.
The story seems to take place during a few hours, there's no sense of timeline whatsoever. The setting from the city never changes, except for going into a subway or a factory that are all along this linear path. You meet a ton of X-Men and Brotherhood mutants and you can choose to help whoever you like. Brotherhood all the way for me, fuck that good shit. This turns out to be irrelevant as the story goes on. The only difference is that instead of fighting along side Brotherhood during certain parts of the game, I would have done it with X-men instead. Boring. Some fights and side missions you can't get to, unless you do the dialog trees. The dialog trees are UNSKIPPABLE at all times. Some save points will put you before X-tremely long and boring chats with different mutants. Like Colossus, I had to listen and watch that sequence like 20 times.
The voice acting isn't great either. One of those where two people talking to each other, laid their audio tracks separately. So it sounds like taking turns talking into a mic and not having an actual conversation. Mix that in with the strange ambient sounds of the game that would drop in and out depending on who was speaking. I imagine because the developers just cut and paste some of that audio, cancelling out other sounds and I don't know anymore. People don't test shit enough. Steve Blum makes an appearance and voices Wolverine and Pyro. Steve has been the voice of since the show Wolverine and the X-men and is also in MvC3. That's the extent of the excitement for the voice acting in this game.
What you got here is something of a mix between Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Batman Arkham City and Mass Effect. Well that's what I was saying when I first sat down with this game, let me try to explain. MUA was a top down beat-em up. Batman had you bouncing off enemies while you beat them up to raise your combo counter. Mass Effect gave you options on how to level up certain powers. The ME comparison is just a keyword fish. Here's the major problems and I'm only going to comment on playing with Aimi, I don't know how the other characters would have worked or the other mutant powers you're offered at the beginning of the game. You get the option to level up these little 2, 3, 4, hit combos, but wait, that's it, they don't chain with anything else. You get mutant abilities, for shadow/phasing I choose stuff like appearing behind enemies and striking them. You could level that up 3 times with experience you get from Jimmys you beat up. Some of that stuff would chain, but I never got any really high combos until my character was maxed and could just fly around in demon form raiping the field.
I'm starting to lose my mind trying to recall some of this game. The Raptr says I only played it for 9 hours. It seemed like 90. 9 hours is for $60 is a big negative. There might be some replay value here if you wanted to use the other mutants and try out the other powers, but the game is so slow to start. You don't get any cool powers until real late in the game. The enemies all look the same, they all look like Ice Climbers. Then you got the flamethrower Jimmys and the Geth looking ED-209 mechs. Of course zombies, what game doesn't have zombie levels anymore. You do get to fight X-men and Brotherhood mutants and I guess that's kinda cool. Wolverine, Magneto, Pyro, just to name a few. You also get to fight a Sentinel and that's pretty sweet. Some parts of the game look like great ideas, but the overall delivery is a pretty big sad face.
There's no co-op and there's no multiplayer. There isn't much replay value here at all. You can play as the other mutants and with the different powers, but the game is so boring, I don't know if that would justify. I don't want to play it anymore. There's challenge rooms that you can replay through the load screen, but only ones you've opened up in the campaign. Oh and every time you do a challenge room, the game bounces you back out to the main menu and you have to go through a bunch of load screens again. Oh god before I forget, X-Men destiny has the worst save systems I've even seen. The game saves randomly, almost always right BEFORE a long cutscene or chatscene you can't skip and there is NO manual saving. I would have had a completely different experience if I could have saved it myself, hell I probably would have beat the first night.
X-men Destiny is not worth $60 bucks that's for sure. In fact according to the Gouki.com PricePWNr, the price has already dropped below $48 bucks and is currently available for the PS3 at $46.77. I still wouldn't say its worth it. It'll be below $40 soon enough, maybe even below $30 before the holidays. So if you haven't picked up X-men Destiny and still want to play it after everything I've told you above, just wait for the price to drop in a few weeks. X-mode? WTF is an X-mode? Push the left bumper? I never used that move once. Nubfarm.
And Silicon Knights been making games for a long time too.
X-Men Destiny gets a Rent it! From me Jimmy. The game is bland and lacks depth and FUN. As an X-Men fan, I did find some of it interesting and I did beat it on the hardest difficulty. So maybe some other X-Men fans would get a kick out of this game, play it on normal and have a good time. Lets see what the sequel -if there is one- improves, because this game could have some potential. Don't be a Jimmy!
Just another day at the office. More PWNn than workin'. Nnnnnnnnnnnnnuab!
Up early today doing some editing. I posted a new Halo Wars Strategy video. Its terrible. I worked on a little Gears of War # Minitage, I don't know about that game.
We played a little GOW3 this evening and I find that game so annoying when I can't find any flow. Granted, I've never been a huge fan of any of the gears. Plus tonight we ended up with one of the most obnoxious party members in the world. Disguised as somebody else he snuck into our party. After 3 games I had to turn it off and go back to the Halo Wars.
Which leads me back to the title. I did not play the X-men at all today. It's so slow paced, it's dreadful. You can't skip the cutscenes and there no chance for a re-do when you get railed in the challenge rooms. The Challenge rooms have suits Jimmy! You can wear the different suits and get different powers... oh never mind.
90% of the day was spent on Halo Wars. WTF? I love it. Watch for a bunch of new videos coming the YouTube channel, plus the Mad Catz promo everyone is waiting for. Don't forget to check out our Resident Evil giveaway right now. You can win a game if you write a preview for it and we're still looking for a Gouki.com Girl to represent.

Marvel is slowly trying to make better games I think, like they have been making better movies. X Men Destiny looks like an Infamous type game to me. The graphics look like a huge sad face, but how does it play?
Here's the trailer in all of it's Nintendo 64 glory.
Jaime Chung plays a 15 year old Japanese girl who just came from Japan. Don't worry her English is so good, you won't even know it was an Asian girl doing the voice.
Remember that show Heroes on NBC, well this is what one of those Jimmys is up to.
Please stop asking me if it's the same guy from Milo and Otis. I don't know.
I don't know who this Jimmy is either, but I'm sure he's thrilled to have a job. He voices Cole in X Men Destiny.
Don't be a Jimmy! Write a story on Gouki.com about why you are hype about X Men Destiny.
The newest trailer for the upcoming x-men title.
I recently saw some gameplay from x-men destiny and its looking pretty sweet. Originally i thought this was going to be like x-men legends/ MUA but i was wrong. You seem to only control one character at a time. I wonder if this is one big story with a few characters to choose from or if each of these new character will have their own story? This game drops at the end of september will you be picking it up?
And now for the last character you can use.
His name is Grant Alexander.
He is a Georgia boy who has moved to California and is on the varsity football team when he realizes he's a mutant. As with the other characters you will be able to pick his base power and have it evolve as you play. But from what I've read the character selection is mostly about background and personality. You will have the option to basically have your character play however you want. So the the answer to almost all of your questions about how does the game play is it depends on how you play.
With Silicon Knights keeping the game very close those of us looking foe details have little to go on.
Acording to Denis Dyack from Silicon Knights that's just how he wants it. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/09/silicon-knights-denis-dyack-still-wary-of-game-previews-hints/
But there are still some bits that make their way out.
This little teaser shot hints at three playable characters. Aimi Yoshida http://gouki.com/Catalog/Details/x-men-destiny has got the most attention.
But while looking around online I found this.
Showing a male character in action.
We also see Quicksilver
And there has been talk about Woverine, Cyclops, and Emma Frost, Pyro, Nightcrawler, and Magneto in part because of the GameTrailers.com and other sites had a decent trailer.
And an official site http://www.herohq.com/xmendestiny that when you follow it to face books mentions that there is more comming at E3.
So far this is all I've found, but it's enough to start people off on all different topics. Making decisions that team you up or put you against the X-Men was confirmed. And Late 2011 for a date. Hopefully there will be some worthwile info from E3 to hold us over.
What do you want to see? Do you want more characters? Some footage of the combat system? More info about the other 2 characters you can play as? Let's here it.
Details are starting to come out. Here is a look at one of the characters.
Her name is Aimi Yoshida and she has just joined the X-Men. She is a 15 year old Japanese girl who was smuggle over by her parents. She will be short and fast, and have an acrobatic fighting style. Hopefuly this will be one of many playable characters in the game. I was hoping to build my own character, but will still play it. You will make choices that will lean you towards the dark or light side, like Fable or KotOR, and it will affect who teams up with you. I'm expecting an action RPG where you learn and upgrade powers as you play through. Hopefuly we will get different stories for different characters instead of a generic fill in the blank game. But with only a target date of holiday season we still have plenty of time to find out more.
What will it take to make you want the game? Not making a character from scratch is a draw back, but new characters means you don't have to worry about the stories getting screwed up (like the movies) and might bring new fans in. Are there characters you want to see? Gambit is in and possibly the Emma Frost. Or do you not care for the X-men to begin with? Let's hear it, don't be a Jimmy.
