Skullgirls is visually stunning and has a lot of great ideas. A new challenger has entered the fighting game market.
When I say Skullgirls is visually stunning, I mean it. The hand drawn sprites make a ton of difference. We don't need polygons bitch. I wish all games were hand drawn like this. Could you imagine how Mass Effect 3 would look if it were animated like a Disney movie? The ending would have been WAAAY better. Because of things like Ms. Fortune's head rolling around on the ground and the bouncing breasts of Valentine, you will be pointing stuff out on the screen a lot when you first sit down with Skullgirls.
8 Characters is all you get for your 1200/$15. Skullgirls crew has said there will be DLC characters. There's tons of space on the character select screen to add at least 6 more. No date or info about any of that has been official announced. I don't even know if they've concepted anything for that.
Just like Marvel VS Capcom you can fight as groups of 3 or -unique to Skullgirls- you can choose teams of 2 or just fight as 1 character. You can tag in and out and use your partners as assists. You also have the option to customize 1 of your assists before the match, so you can have that character do whatever move you like. Even if you just want a standing Roundhouse. Another Skullgirls bonus feature.
You can choose to play as just 1 super powerful character. I thought after a few times of just playing with 1 character, using a team of 2 worked best for me. Having the option to tag in another full health bar is helpful and could intimadate your opponent. Also having an assist helps for set ups. You can chain supers, do knock ups and hit up from the ground after an air juggle. There's a ton of options while fighting and it feels very sturdy. We'll check in more with balancing issues after the pros have at it for a few weeks.
The music and sounds in Skullgirls are very classical. It fits in well with the overall feel of the game. There is a story mode and I ran through that real quick. Had to fight the final boss twice. :( There are beginning and end sequences with some slight animations to them, but nothing full on. At least there's a story and from what I skipped through as fast as possible, it seemed to be relevant and well done.
Skullgirls gets a Buy it! Anybody into fighting games should give it a try and if you like it, definitely support it. Made in America baby!
Below is the clip of us first playing the Skullgirls. What all my nonsense and blithering and blathering above is all about. Check it out, there's a lot of myself whippin' on BatRastered.
