Iorilamia Wins MVC3 Tournament and a booming Maui Fightscene

The fighting game Community in Maui has exploded in the last couple of months due to one random idea. (Finals match link inside!)

For a long time me, my friend Eli and Dwyane thought we were the best on Maui when it came to majority of fighting games out there (except Tekken). So a couple of months ago while at my house Eli was like " Yo, let's make an event on Facebook, a SSF4 and MVC3 tournament at the college and see who will come" I thought it was an amazing idea and we went on with it. Me and 2 other friends brought a system and our games. The Maui College has a huge student lounge that is open almost the whole day that anyone an go to, and we were surprised by all the people who showed up. Learning that there were people as good as us in some games and better in others was amazing. That day we didn't get around to a tournament, I believe there was like 8 hours of casuals, leading to us becoming good friends with a lot of the guys who stayed until closing.

Soon after one of the guys we met created a group of Facebook called Maui Street Fighter. Here we planned the next events and settled that we would meet up every Wednesday for SSF4 tournaments and mvc3 casuals (not too many people played mvc3, so a small tourney would be lame) Every Wednesday the amount of people grew and everyone's skill levels increased.

Things have gotten to a point where we had a good idea on who was bringing what set-ups and we could run our events at the school easily. The lounge is open from about 8 am to 9 pm. The security guards have gotten used to seeing around 30 dudes getting super hyped over games, so sometimes they let us stay till 11 to finish our events <3

A big surprise about a week ago was a huge influx in new people! The best part was, they were Marvel and Tekken players. This led up to us having 3 actual tournaments in a night (which is hard to fit in when you do them one by one). Tekken was singles (since it had the smallest entrants), Marvel was teams of 2 and SSF4 AE was teams of 3.

I love playing MVC3 casuals and felt pretty confident in the tournament. I didn't play Tekken and my SSF4 team got OCV'd by my close friend who plays me all the time; knew it was coming :p My teamate for Marvel was Adi, a guy who I felt pretty even with in skill leading up to more confidence (he played Wolverine, She-Hulk Storm and Wesker). He went first, beating the first few teams by himself and I didn't have to play. But when it came to the semi-finals and finals, he lost every set and I carried the way (which added more pressure than I thought it would). 

In the end, it came down to me playing Morrigan, X-23 and Wesker vs. a really strong Hulk-She-Hulk and Dormmamu. (Before that I played his teamate in a very interesting battle with me playing Mageto, x-23 and Wesker and him playing Magneto, X-23 Dommamu)  Both of us were dropping combos towards the end and I purposely didn't punish some things because I knew if I messed up one bit, I would have died ; ended up playing it safe. The photographer was nice enough to upload a video of the final match, but it is only on Facebook, I'm not sure if you will be able to view it upon signing in (I HOPE SO! IT'S GODLIKE) If anything, I'll share it on the Gouki.com wall.

So Adi and I won! Split the prize $ and took a bro-photo. It was truly a great tournament and a great experience. Glare makes me look cross-eyed but that's ok. Everyone attending the Maui College fighting events are awesome people and it is great that our community has grown so much from a friend saying " Brah let's make a event on Facebook". It's so hype having over 30 people in a room with many different play-styles and skills. Hopefully I can get more pictures from the guy or videos.

Are epic comeback factors in fighting games a good thing?

Some of the top fighting games have gone into a trend of having crazy comeback mechanics. This goes beyond your regular super move. Ultras, Red-Mode,Critical Counter and the controversial X-Factor have been relatively new. Are they good to have?

Fighting games takes lots of skill, dexterity and focus. Always generating lots of hype, fighting games are one of the most competitive genre of gaming. But what creates even more excitement are comebacks. Being almost dead and doing a epic combo or seemingly reading what your opponent will do and block/ counterattack to victory displays lots of skill or possibly luck. Comeback mechanics have been in fighting games forever but in the recent years with SF4, MvC3, Tekken 6 and KOF12 we have been exposed to some very interesting comeback factors that do require skill (some more than others) and have changed the outcome on many tournaments and casual play unexpectedly. Some of these mechanics seem reasonable, but a few may need to be altered a little. Here is what I think of them:

My review of the Arcade Boxing game "Facebreaker"

Recently for my birthday a friend of mine saw a cheap PS3 game at Gamestop called "Facebreaker" by EA.  He thought this would make a awesome present....let the review begin.

Facebreaker is a 2-player game with a decent amount of characters, and even more to unlock. As any arcady-like fighting game, it isn't one to take seriously, but the problems and frustration this game causes are very notable.

Graphics and Design- Basically all the characters are based off of some sort of sterotype. The asian girl is hyper and wears ridiculous clothes, the Russian guy "Molotov" is ridiculously huge with bullets and grenades attached to his belt, and so on. The ridiculous muscles, breasts and facial expressions make the game fun. It keeps a true arcade-style look and is even more entertaining to poke fun at. The different level backgrounds are simple, nothing too special to pay attention to. All in all, the characters are lovable.

Sounds and Music- Nothing special here. A bunch of generic OOPMFS and WHACKS coming from the characters followed by grunts and whines. The music is usually heard in the background and doesn't really stand out.It mainly consists of angsty rock. A lot of it is from half-assed bands no one really enjoys, but notibly there are tracks from Drop Kick Murphys and Gogol Bordello.

Gameplay- Horrible. Even as an arcade game ; horrible.Your character can throw, dodge, block, dash, punch high and low. You also have cool special move combos that lead into "facebreakers" and other types of breakers. The game turned out being a mash fest. Everyone punches RIDICULOUSLY fast and can chain combos that take off way too much health. The problem with the speed and how effective mashing is, is that you find yourself not having the reflexes to compete in a  legit way. Many counters and blocks come out luckily. Parrying does give the game a bit of skill, but not too much. What is awesome about the gameplay is that every character has some special only for them. Whether it be some sort of movement, or combo, they did a nice job on that. Besides taking off your opponents health bar and winning by knockouts, performing a succesful "facebreaker" is like doing a instant-kill in guilty gear....but even easier. Pulling off certain combos gets you this, and it doesn't win the round, it wins the match as a whole.

Cool extra stuff- The game has a face capture thingy so you can scan yourself or someone as a character and use it online. Also the game has damage progression, you see how beat up your character is getting and shows it in cutscenes. And...Kim Kardashian is in the game, lolol?

Game Modes- Besides the typical practice mode and story mode ( which is...not much) and so on, there is a "couch Royal". It is tournament style play with your friends, that was a little nice.

Anyways, FLUSH IT! This game isn't even a rent, unless you want to dick around with your friends on a ridiculously reptitive cartoony game. It's fun for like...20 minutes. I understand it is a Arcade-Type game, but they could have put some more thought into the fighting system and balancing. The game simply doesn't have enough magic to keep you playing, it might be BAD ASS for little kids though.

Project Zomboid seems like a promising Zombie Game

Indie Stone Studios has an intriguing game in the works that me be the most in-depth zombie game you have heard of.

The game is still in works, you can pre-order it / donate for $8 or more and receive free updates forever, awesome. Anyways, heres some stuff planned/ being worked on features.

 You will be able to play on browser or stand-alone game itself . A full body dmg system will be implemented, example would be jumping out of a window will break your leg....you won't get far. Different zombies are affected different ways, sight, smell, sound which also ties into the games real-time feature, which changes how you will deal with certain zombies at different times of the day. Character are effected by almost anything. Hunger, insanity, a scratch that may slowly transform you.

What really caught my eye was how zombie bodies don't just dissapear. Mounds of bodies may mentally effect you or your teamates or slowly disease you, burying them can take a long time...and burning them lets people...or zombies know where you are. Multiplayer ofcourse is neccesary . Need to keep eachother safe, barracade buildins and store your items. But you never know if one of them may "turn" And ofcourse the game has crafting and stat building! Learn to fight zombies better, build shit, and treat wounds.

In a recent interview , the developers stated the game isn't a MMO. That gaming news sources just started calling it that. They did say the multiplayer is up to 8 players (so far) and that every building/house/school/hospital can be entered.

Create your own Portal 2 level for free

Valve releasing a free Beta for "Portal 2 Authoring Tools"

Beta for Portal 2 Authoring Tools is now available guys! It is currently in Beta and FREE. It is PC only and you need a Steam account to run it. It will be found in the "Tools" tab. They said that these are the same tools that used to make Portal 2. In this bets we will be able to create our own singleplayer and co-op maps, new character skins, 3D models, sound effects, and music.  

This is what they include:

- Updated version of Hammer, the Source level editor
- Updated Faceposer
- Example maps and instances to help build new maps
- Updated suite of command-line compiling utilities

Portal fans who like to sit down and build your own amazing creations for hours (Minecraft anyone?) Well here we go. If this is honestly the same tools they used for Portal 2, then the fun should be endless. I haven't gotten a chance to try it yet, but will soon. what do you guys think of it? Fallout New Vegas glitches update (fixed)

Today PS3 players in North America and European areas can download the latest game update for Fallout: New Vegas. "Update 1.02" . This update will be available on Xbox 360 and Steam early next week.

Companions now show up as waypoints on the map

Companions will always fast travel with you, unless told to wait or sent away

Fix: DLC error/save corruption

Fix: Entering the strip after Debt Collector causes crash and autosave corruption

Bulletstorm, it's a game full of tasteless but extremely funny humor and one- liners. http://www.youtube.com/user/NormalDifficulty loved dialogue so much he created a montage of ridiculous and raunchy sayings in the Campaign. The video doesn't really spoil much and it's not that long either. I laughed my ass off during the single player hearing some of these lines and laughed again watching the video, is it funny to you or just tasteless stupidity? Leave a comment below , jimmy ;)

The Great Gatsby....THE VIDEO GAME!

Remember reading The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald in highschool wishing " if only it was a video game...." ?

I'm speechless. It's a fake NES online game modeled after the book Gatsby created by Charlie Hooey, Pete Smith Dylan Valentine and Michael DiMotta. The game is made in old fashioned platformer style, jump, shoot and collect coins. You play as Nick Carraway, traveling through West Egg killing butlers and showgirls...with your flying hat! It's actually pretty damn fun and has some bosses. The first level probably has the catchiest song I've ever heard in video game history. Even if you haven't read that boring book, feel free the check out the game :D

Killzone 3 Custom Game Patches are a huge step up

Massive patch list came fixing many bugs, but what may be more exciting are the customizations to come in match-making!

Besides the usual bugs, exploits and balancing patches, they are also bringing us new features to custom match making. It will be released in 2 "Phases" ,  Phase 1 comes out tommorow with all the other fixes, and phase 2 is to be announced.

Phase 1 allows you to create unranked games with the choice of

-game mode

-map

-missions (warzone only)

-mission time (warzone only)

-invite squad members

-invite enemy squad leader

Phase 2

 -More configuration options for missions in Warzone and Operations

-Adjustable kill count for Guerrilla Warfare

-Configurable Unlocks (choose which one you want to play with)

-Configurable Classes (choose which one you want to play with)

-Configurable Weapons, Abilities, Skills, Ribbons

-Friendly Fire On/Off

-Brutal Melee On/Off

OOOOH DAMN! If you play K3, you know this is a huge step in an awesome direction. The custom possibilites sound so fun, already imagining a game with only pistols, brutal melee and Infiltrators ; insane.

And heres the rest of the patch notes that are cool, but the Phases are what really caught my eye.

GAMEPLAY-

 

 -Bullet Damage and Faster Aim ribbon now unlock correctly

- Separate turn speeds for ADS on Primary weapons in Multiplayer

- Increased Accuracy ribbon effectiveness has been lowered

- Bullet Damage ribbon effectiveness has been lowered

- The 3rd person revive beam now shows correctly

- Bilgarsk Boulevard - preventing players getting stuck at spawn location

- Akmir Snowdrift - fixed a problem where the speaker object can fall beneath a piece - of geometry

- Fixed a crash when joining a Guerrilla Warfare Clan match

- Blood Gracht - Fix for a hang when the Recon ability was used

SERVER STUFF-

 

- Fixed a crash while joining a Warzone game

- Player gets directed to multiplayer lobby when being kicked from game due to inactivity

- Adjustments to reduce the server load

EXPLOITS-

 

- MAWLR Graveyard -Improved collision around one of the Capture and Hold locations

- Kaznan Jungle - Added a blocker around a tree to prevent player to use tree to jump out of the level

- Bilgarsk Boulevard - Removed invisible collision of S&D objectives in Guerrilla Warfare

- Bilgarsk Boulevard - Prevent players from accessing an advantageous position (above the ISA Base) and climb out of the level

Single Player Story- 

- Scrapyard Shortcut - Mobile Factory - Fixed a hang to a red Debug screen upon the user reaching the Jetpack Troopers

MENU-

 

- Added a "Mute all" button

- Updated icons and text on the Medals statistics

- Fixed clipped text for moderator messages

- The Faster Reload ribbon now updates properly on the Personal statistics page

- The Increased Accuracy ribbon now updates properly on the Personal statistics page

- The Bullet Damage ribbon now updates properly on the Personal statistics page

- Fixes a hang when accepting a squad invite on the final results screen of an online game

- Fixed the Pause functionality in Botzone on the Class selection screen

- "Squad menu" is changed to "manage players" in the menu

MOVE AND SHARPSHOOTER-

 

- Button configuration improvements - Swapped L1/L2 grenade and aim

- Melee is now on the circle button

- Multiplayer - Aim Lock will now time out after one second

- Camera turn upped while using jetpack. Lowered for mounted weapons

What characters would you like to see return to a series?

What characters do you wish would come back to a game series? Did one of your favorites get killed off, did the story change completely, or did they just stop putting that character in games?

First I'd like to start off with Geese" DOUBLE REPPUKEN" Howard. He hasn't been in a new snk game for years.

 

The mans a badass to say the least. He is from FatalFury and his attitude and fighting style are what makes me miss him the most. The version of Geese that I want returning, is one similiar to the CvS2 style. If you are not familiar with Geese, basically he had Gouken counters, air fireballs that push him backwards, and ground fireballs. He had incredibly strong normals and his super "RAGING STORM!!!!" is the best anti air ever. Besides his yelling, what made him so cool was he taunted you when he throws you and basically tells you your going to die before the round starts; "you cannot escape long death...." I would have loved to see him in kof12 (a long with 30 other characters,lol) and he wasn't included in 13 (doubt they will have DLC). Here to hoping SNKP use him in something. Second Character is Karas! The armored swordsman of Tatsunoko.

Karas was a popular anime and manga before his appearance in Tatsunoko vs Capcom. He is on my wishlist because even though TvC was an AMAZING game (and will always be one of my favorite vs games), it did not get really big, mainly because it was wii only and Americans don't know wtf Tatsunoko is. With MvC3 coming I don't think we wil see a tvc2 anytime soon...or ever. Karas was one of the lowest hp characters (next to Zero and roll) but his playstyle was beast. He has great offensive slashes with nice reach and quick jabs that allow him to combo into huge setups. His reflect projectile move and assist also could be used as an attack into his super combo. He had a counter super, one that rushes, and one that turns him into a flying disc, all of these perfectly transported from the anime to the game. What made karas unique was his chain attack, his srk and a dash atack that could lead into combos. His uppercut attack was not only extremely fast, but it could be done twice and went straight up very high. His chain could be used long range to hold enemies for assist mixups and supers, or to pull them towards him leaving them helpless. Despite him being "bottom tier"  because he got super nerfed in American version,I felt that if you used him right, he was unstoppable! Finally is the Zora people, from Legend of Zelda.

They where Fish people that played guitars made out of fish bones ; epic. You first encounter them in Ocarina of time, but Majoras Mask is where the real fun starts. Once you get the Zora mask, you become one of them and get to explore their world. It was just good fun. The outside world was big and interesting enough, but being able to swim to  new places was even more exciting. Obviously the new Zelda game coming out for Wii ins't having some sort of transforming link (that we know of), but as long as we get to interact with the Zora and travel to their world, I'm happy.Video of Zora link doing quests and stuff, uplaoded by http://www.youtube.com/user/SonicBlueSky
