Battlefield 3 is now available for pre-order through Amazon. Also check out the new teaser trailer.

Amazon just unlocked the Pre-order for Battlefield 3. Battlefield is my preferred earth shooter. You can expect Team Gouki to be all over this when it is release sometime in the future.

That box art is probably unofficial. There is no confirmed release date. Amazon just appears to just have a filler date. Battlefield could come out this year. If there is no COD, it would be good for Battlefield to compete with Gears this holiday season.

Check out the teaser trailer.

Crysis 2 campaign review

By: BatRastered Mar 31, 2011 | 4 Comments

A decent length campaign with some truly awesome moments is marred by some terrible AI.

Crysis 2 has an interesting campaign, if you can get past the bordom of the first few levels, that is. I spent about 14 hours in the campaign, that's a pretty good length by today's standards. Certainly, you're not getting cheated like Modern Warfare 2's ridiculously short story. The story takes place on a Manhattan island that has been devistated by a plague. Little do they know, that this disaster was casued by aliens.

While I had a great time in the later levels fighting against the "Ceph" aliens, the game starts you off fighting against a private military corporation known as the "Cell". I guess they were in charge of evacuating the city or something, but I was never really sure as to why they wanted to kill me. I mean, I'm trying to save the world! I guess somebody wanted my suit? Whatever. Fighting the Cell is 50% boring and 50% terrible, glitchy AI. If they catch a glimpse of you, they start shooting, but if you're far enough away when this happens, you can just cloak and they often go back to doing what they were doing as if nothing happened. Reall good security force there, Jimmy! The dialouge they spew is equally buggy. Once, I stealth killed a Cell soldier, and one of his buddies heard it and went to investigate. I cloaked and waited for him to show up. Upon standing over his friend's corpse, he quips "must've been a false alarm." Huh?

Once the Ceph start to show up, you're in for some real action. They jump off walls and up onto roof tops to flank you and, of course, take more that a bullet or two to bring down. Unfortunately, I was a good 5 hours into the game before the good stuff happened. In fact, the demo level we saw at E3 2010 was from the second to last level of the game. Really? Really! Still, fighting a walking alien tank while being hounded by many Ceph ground troops is a lot of fun and a good challenge. Interestingly, after wiping out a large chunk of the Ceph offensive, I'm back fighting Cell again, trying to rescue someone from them and they're hell-bent on killing me again... as if I didn't just save all their asses... Yeah, the story is a little convoluted.

The graphics and sound of Crysis 2 are top-notch. I played on an XBOX 360 (in HD, but not 3D) and thought the game looked spectacular. Even better considering I didn't have to install anything to get up and running. Just pop in the disk and go. The draw distance in Crysis 2 is really incredible, which allows the sniper rifle to be very useful in many situations. The orchestral musical score, while not quite Halo standards for me, was quite good and added to the overall experience. The suit itself talks to you, telling you when you cloak or armor are turned on. This is ok at first, but it gets tiresome since those modes consume energy, you can't just leave them on which means you end up hearing that a lot. The controls are typical for a console FPS, with the addition of the shoulder buttons controlling your armor and cloak abilities and never got in the way of the action, although sometimes when close to an object I couldn't jump the way I wanted to. For some reason, the game continues to tell you how to crawl under things even towards the end of the game, I found no way to turn the hints off.

I didn't play much of the multi-player, though what I did see felt a lot like CoD style, which I hate. See goukijones' MP review later. The campaign itself has no real reason to go back and do it again. In fact, it feels a bit like Halo 2, giving you that "hey we're working on part 3" moment at the end.

Good:

  • An FPS with a campaign that actually lasts more than one play session.
  • Interesting fights with the alien "Ceph".
  • The nano-suit is great and makes you feel like a badass.
  • Upgrading the suit and swapping weapon parts (scopes, silencers, etc) doesn't pause the game or take you out of the environment at all.
  • Most of the story is told in the game engine without taking you out of first-person.
  • Controls are spot-on. Shooting feels right.
  • Looks great. Sounds great.

Bad:

  • Multi-player feels like CoD. You have to rank up to get better guns, which is hard when people you play against already have them.
  • Fights against human "Cell" group are boring, plagued by terrible AI and audio bugs, and just don't make sense.
  • Enemy path finding is often broken, leaving bad guys stuck between objects or facing a wall.
  • Too much hand-holding by the game. Press B to crouch is useful in level one, just plain annoying in level 18.
  • The suit won't shut up. I hope you like hearing "cloak engaged", or "maximum armor", or "nano vision enabled", because you'll hear it a lot.
  • No replay value to the campaign.

If you're into the CoD style multiplayer, you might enjoy the overall experience of this game more than I did.

Overall: Rent it

Mass Effect 3 delayed until 2012

By: BatRastered May 5, 2011 | 7 Comments

According to ME3's Facebook page, don't expect ME3 until the first quarter of 2012

We're still a month from E3, but already we've got our first major release date "adjustment" of the season. I fully expect to see a   few more of these "TBA 2011" games slip into next year. This is a little dissapointing, but the last Mass Effect slipped into January too, so not entirely unexpected.

Source: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150170133576645.300911.85811091644

Call of Duty is just like Madden now, every year one thing is different and you just have to pay the $60 don't you Jimmy?

What I want to say real quick is that the Call of Duty and the Madden series are getting a little ridiculous. Stop charging us full price for these games every year. I can't believe the world flipped out when Capcom said a new version of Street Fighter IV was coming out and it was only $40. People were pissed about that. I don't ever hear anything about Call of Duty or Madden coming out every year for full retail. $60 fuckin' dollars!

Why do you need that new Madden game so bad? Because the running back can twist now with a flick of the thumbstick.

Why do you need that new Call of Duty so bad? Because it has new maps? Or you can drive a remote control car up some other Jimmys ass.

Madden's roster could be updated via DLC. OR you can only charge us $40 maybe even $50 for it. We did just buy the same game last year, that the god damn gamestop won't even give us $10 for on trade. You can't even trade in Madden 2010 toward Madden 2011. Well you could, but that deal expired in March when you weren't even thinking about football. EA should step up and give back to the community that has supported this franchise for 20 years.

Call of Duty comes out every year now too, sometimes twice the same year. It's made by two different companies now. One just copies the others code and then repaints it. And BAUM! We got another $60 Call of Duty game to push out on the nubfarm. We'll buy it, hell I'm obligated. But this year, I'm boycotting this series bullshit. How much different is Call of Duty Black ops be from Modern Warfare or the World at War. Somebody had to tell that they were made by two different companies at first. I hate them both. Madden we know is not that different at all. The rosters in real life aren't that different, but we got a whole new Madden game.

Anyway fuck it. It's not fair to the gamers. Series games should be at a discount or I should get some kind of coupon or discount for continuing to buy every year.

Don't be a Jimmy!

EA and Insomniac reveal Overstrike at E3 2011

By: BatRastered Jun 11, 2011 | 2 Comments

During EA's E3 2011 press conference, Ted Price announced that Insomniac games was working on a multiplatform co-op shooter.

Insomniac Games, most known for their PS3 exclusives, the Resistance and Rachet & Clank series are now working with EA to release a multiplatform co-op shooter. I'll let Ted Price take it from here:

Here's the full press release:

EA AND INSOMNIAC GAMES REVEAL NEW FOUR-PLAYER CO-OP ACTION GAME OVERSTRIKE

Award-Wining Developer Makes its Worldwide Multiplatform Debut with an Explosive Spy-Fi Adventure

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – June 6, 2011 – A shadowy organization has threatened to take over the world and there’s only one team that can stop it: Overstrike 9. This afternoon during the Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) press conference at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), EA and independent developer Insomniac Games (creator of the Ratchet & Clank™ and Resistance™ franchises) announced the first details of the highly-anticipated game, Overstrike. Combining Insomniac’s knack for imaginative weaponry with immersive and witty storytelling, Overstrike is a four-player cooperative action game featuring a team of elite agents called Overstrike 9. Comprised of an ex-mercenary, a lifelong thief, a gifted young scientist and a decorated detective, the members of Overstrike 9 are considered outcasts within their own organization, but are the best team suited to stop a global terrorist group from attempting to wipe out humankind. Overstrike 9 uses lethal teamwork and an arsenal of fringe-tech gadgets to infiltrate and destroy enemy strongholds. Overstrike marks Insomniac’s first multiplatform release and will be available on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

“Overstrike presents a unique blend of features that have long been a part of the Insomniac DNA: high powered gadgets, action-heavy gameplay, memorable characters in a deep and mysterious universe and of course a touch of humor,” said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. “And since this is our first multiplatform game, we’re especially excited to introduce ourselves to a new audience – one which may not have experienced our previous games.”

Overstrike will launch on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system.

Star Wars: The Old Republic delayed?

By: BatRastered May 5, 2011 | 10 Comments

Not quite, but EA hedges its bets during their investor conference call yesterday.

NOTE: When you see "Fiscal Year" in this story it is referring to the year ending on March 31, 2012.

EA's release to investors stated that:

We are preparing the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic.  The launch date, while in
our fiscal year, is not yet certain.  We see roughly $0.15 EPS variability between the
potential launch window

And:

we assume that Star Wars: The Old Republic ships in the calendar year, but our guidance
range accounts for a range of ship dates within the fiscal year

Public companies must recognize any uncertainty, by law, in their investor guidance, so the above is not exactly shocking. To further this point we have this:

While we fully anticipate launching Star Wars: The Old Republic in Q2 or Q3, the low
end of our guidance range assumes the outside possibility of a January launch.

Finally, From Frank Gibeau (President of EA Games) on the conference call we have:

And finally, the biggest event of the year will be Star Wars: The Old Republic -- a jawdropping subscription-based MMO that is captivating critics and fans in the beta test.  We
currently have over one million double-opt-in beta testers for the world’s first story-driven, fully
voiced MMO.

Everyone is waiting for us to announce the ship date… Sorry, but that’s not going to happen
today.  We’re holding the date for two reasons – first, we don’t want to tip off the competition;
second, we want more data from the beta test to guarantee a spectacular experience at
launch

So, we got a whole lot of nothing on the conference call yesterday. Lots of analysts are speculating that the game will slip to 2012 based on this, but if you read carefully and have listened to this type of thing in the past, this is not what they are saying, though they are acknowledging the possibility.

When do you think The Old Republic will finally ship? Leave a comment and let us know.

Alice: Madness Returns Pre-order is also digital music...

By: iorilamia May 15, 2011 | 4 Comments

Shadows of the Damned isn't the only one with digital CD's...

Alice: Madness Returns is coming out next month and the pre-order deal has already shown up on the Gamestop website. Unfortunately, it is another digital downlaod CD. (Same as Shadow of the Damned, see story here http://gouki.com/Story/Details/shadows-of-the-damned-pre-order-isnt-as-crazy-as-you-may-think).

The Alice music download is 9 songs from the soundtrack featuring new music from Chris Verenna (used to be in Nine Inch Fails) It says a code will be sent to you within 2 business days to download it. But here is what confuses me a bit:

It says "9 songs from the soundtrack" , is it not the whole soundtrack? Not too sure, hopefully something from the official site will come up soon. A second game going with the digital CD, I hope this isn't becoming a "thing".  Catherine and Disgea 4 are still coming out with actual CD'S and art, which is awesome. What do you think of this and what do you prefer? What are some ups an downs of digital CD's in your opinion?  Leave a comment below.

Mortal Kombat is going to need an online key?

By: DragonKiss83 Mar 30, 2011 | 8 Comments

Another game that will require a code...

It looks like if you buy a used copy you will have to drop another $10 to play online.  I get that they want you to buy a new copy because they don't make anything off the used ones, but it still seems like a dick move.  The list of games in this category will keep growing, and I'm sure companies like Gamestop will eventually balance it by fixing their own prices.  What do you think?  Are we getting screwed?  Should we suck it up and pay the extra $?  Do you only buy used?  Or do you even play online?  You know what to do, Don't be a Jimmy.

Electronics Arts will be bringing out the big guns in 2011 with huge sequels. All of these multiplatform games are sure to translate into huge sales. Dragon Age and Mass Effect are both Gouki.com editor's choice. Here's a look at some more EA 2011 games.

Electronic Arts 2011 Preview

Dead Space 2 - I missed out on the Dead Space 1. FNJimmy will be reviewing Dead Space 2. It looks like a Jimmy ass game.

Dragon Age II - Thrilled about another Dragon Age adventure Jimmy. One of my favorite combat systems of all time. A lot of people don't like it, well then FUACK YUU!

Crysis 2 - Wow. What can I say. This is supposed to be the most mind blowing game ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This game was demo'd right in front of me at E3 2010. The room was cold as hell. There were 27 PC's trying to run this demo. Afterward my mind was blown.

Mass Effect 3 - Super excited for another Mass Effect adventure. I'm really hoping that ME3 stays more like part 2 mixed with a little more of Part 1. We don't need it reinventing itself again. Bring back the Mako!

SSX Deadly Descents - Some Jimmys are thrilled about this. Me, not so much.

Battlefield 3 DLC fiasco

By: SamGamer Jun 14, 2011 | 8 Comments

Battlefield 3 was marketed well but EA are back to what they do best. Ruin the experience. This is about the whole "Exclusive DLC" promotion and why gamers are angry at EA and DICE.

Let's be honest, Battlefield 3 is one of our anticipated games this year. EA and DICE have done well to market the game and almost diminish the popularity of the new COD franchise. Battlefield 3 won the crowd at E3 with their playable demo last week, but it seems like the first real mistake from EA on BF3 has emerged and possible can hurt them badly.

Last week EA, in an attempt to encourage people in UK to pre-order the game included the "Physical Warfare Pack" as an exclusive pre-order bonus. It includes an exclusive LMG, a flash suppressor attachment and flechette ammo. Fans aren't happy about EA forcing people to buy the game before the release by offering exclusive items from 'specific' retail shops. They are basically force to get access to the full equipment arsenal. This angered the fans and the 'Boycott BF3' movement was formed by redditors. Last couple of days /r/gaming has been busy with both angry and funny posts on the whole DLC fiasco.                                            physical warfare pack

Even @notch, the developer of minecraft reacted to this via twitter.

"When I make a movie, it will have different exclusive scenes added to it depending on what cinema you go to. #subtle"  [email protected] notch

EA responded to  official "Battlefield 3" blog after the reddit thread started picking up steam. EA representative defended his position on Launch DLC for BF3 by saying that "Owning these items will give you a more varied arsenal, but it will not give you a significant advantage on the battlefield." Here's the point. Most people buy the damn game to play multiplayer. When they don't get the full package they get angry and that's understandable. EA is persistant with their stand and say "they were chosen not to be overpowered or imbalance or break the game in anyway" If EA wants to encourage people to buy it why not provide everyone the equal arsenal. As always EA doesn't change their mind unless someone proves them they are wrong and embarrass them in public forums like the old BFBC days.

Yes! EA attempted the same DLC practice with "Battlefield: Bad Company" but ended up pulling back after a boycott on SarcasticGamer.com complained about the balance issues associated with exclusive weapons and equipment in a multiplayer shooter. Both @EA and @Battliefield twitter handles have been receiving much hate every hour. Most of them saying they have cancelled the pre-order. Let's hope EA pulls back this crap too like the BFBC bs.
