I basically try to recap the day while slowly drinking four beers and mixing in a few shots of whiskey. Well done vintage blithering blathering. Don't be a Jimmy. EVO 2012 Day 1 was spectacular and I enjoyed every second of it.
BatRastered and myself departed the house around 10am. We both for forgot our business cards. So we had to turn back and get them. Don't be a Jimmy! We were finally on the way. Traffic was nice, we drove past all of the metal donkeys on the side of the freeway. Parking was ridiculous. The Ceaser's Palace parking garage was packed and it seemed like we were never going to get a space. We continued drive to around in circles for unrelenting 20 minutes. There were 2 cars in front us, at this point we figured we were not getting a space, ever! I saw somebody pull out in the row next to us. Now was our chance, we just needed these to Jimmys in front of to keep on driving straight. They did, we parked, lets talk about EVO.
Having EVO at Ceaser's Palace is the best, it's a perfect fight for the fighting game championship of the world. Shout out to Mr. Wizard for again inviting Gouki.com and putting on a hell of a production with EVO 2012. This truly is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. I'm proud that EVO takes place in Las Vegas.
BatRastered and I ventured inside the Emperor's room into the world of EVO. The musty scent almost knocked us out the second we passed the threshold of PWN. We bumped around for a short while, checking out the lay out, looking for anyone we know. DiveKick! Heard. I've been wanting to play DiveKick since I first saw that sweet trailer 6 months ago. Well a lot has changed since that trailer, like there isn't just 2 CHARACTERS -in a loud booming voice- in the game any more. There are 6 now and 2 more possibly if some Jimmy buys them with the KickStarter program. Now I've heard some shit that Keits has been getting for asking for 30k to get DiveKick shipped, but I don't care. He was charging a dollar to play DiveKick on the big screen at EVO. Apparently it was the same deal at UFGT & CEO. That's cool. People want to play this game and they will pay a dollar to play it. Not me. We got in the free line. There's a free line that is on a smaller TV.
BatRastered played first and he won his match. I played second. The guy playing me was talking on the side of me to other people about DiveKick. He sounded like he knew what was up. I asked him how do I select my character. He explained the different ways of selecting 1 of the 5 or 6 fighters. I figure, I'm done at this point, I'm about to be exposed as a DiveKick fraud. I beat the him 5 to 3. PWNN! He was in shock. That's what happens when you fight GoukiJones. I'm the number 1 DiveKick player in Las Vegas.
Next BatRastered and I played Nidhog. Nidhog is another indie game appearing at EVO, it's very very retro in style. The graphics look like old school Atari.2 characters, both have swords. You can crouch low and kick, you can throw the sword, but then it's drop on the ground and you have to pick it back up. Also just a straight lunge forward with the sword is available. On the first screen you face off against your opponet. The goal is to get past your opponent and run to the end of the map. There's like 3 or 4 screens to run though. Whoever makes it to the end wins. Very simple, very cool. More maps would increase replay value. BTW I beat BatRastered. Number 1 in the World!
We check out the rest of the indie games, but didn't get a chance to play any. Saw Persona 4, I think. Justice League Injustice was there, but we didn't stand around to watch the demo. It was probably the demo we saw at E3, I'll try and get some of it on video tomorrow. We also saw Playstation All Stars Battle Royal. Meh. Sorry. I have 0 feelings for this game. I do appreciate that Sony is trying to sell it in the FGC. I mean they got Clockwork on the dev team. Gootecks this it's genius. I don't know if it's going to work. I think the FGC sees it as a Smash Clone and for that reason has already dismissed it. Will Justin Wong be playing Battle Royal on some stream or at tournaments after it comes out? I don't think so.
Okay, we had to get out of there and find out where the panels were being held. The EVO app on the iPhone was buried in another program called Guidebooks. Shout out to Guano for tipping us off that the APP info was on the back of our badge. Fuckin' Jimmys! We split up with Guano at that point, he had to lube his stick and lighten his load. While we were talking to Guano in the hallway we bumped into Delriach. Delriach is reppin' the nationwide Mortal Kombat and will be doing commentary on the stream tomorrow. Shot out ot Delraich, keep pwnn bro!
At some point we bumped into Vicko. Also known as VivoVicko is a Las Vegas local. Cool guy, does stick mods and travels the country playing in different tournaments. He got his new business cards today and he was excited about that. If you live in the Las Vegas area and need your stick modded, call this Jimmy today! He can also get you custom painted balltops. Anything you can imagine. Sweet stuff, definitely take a look.
I'm really having a hard time of remember what happened next. I'm tired now. We're watching the stream of the semi finals. Where is Marn? We had lunch with Guano, his match wasn't until 4pm. No beer for Guano. He leaned into the waitress and asked the waitress to split his check off. I saw that has a private conversation and expected the waitress to bring back to checks. 1 for Guano and 1 for Team Gouki. She brings back 3. Jimmy. Either way we all handled it.
2PM Capcom Panel. Panel opens up with SFxT. It didn't surprise me with the amount of people that still are passionate about SFxT. 1 guy said that he was the player left in his community. :) This will be the last year this game is at EVO and possibly ever discussed. The we got some Derek Neal and Ryota Niitsuma action. Derek Neal is making the HD and updated version of Marvel VS Capcom & Marvel Super Heroes and everything he said sounded great. I loved all of the ideas they were implementing and a lot was based on user feedback. Derek's got it easy, he's got a great game already made and just has to make the online experience something memorial. There's tons of achievements and I saw in-game achievements like using correct spacing and such. That's cool. At this point I'm thinking this game is going to be teaching Jimmys how to play. That all looks great. [BatRastered Capcom's Panel Story]
Now it was time to talk about Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3. -excuse me, I may lose it ahead- First they accidently show a slide to the room of something called "Clash Idea" and the picture shows Wolverine's Berserker Barrage clashing with Ryu's Super Fireball. Then the screen goes blank again and they start the panel. Shout out to Cinderkin for translating for Niitsuma. The first thing out of Niitsuma's grill is "We're not going to patch UMvC3." Okay. Fine. We're [Capcom] just want to talk to about stuff we wanted to do with Ultimate, but cut out in the final product. What do you think?
What do I think? I think this is complete bullshit and I'm extremely bored. This talk about old shit we ain't gonna do nothing with was a complete waste of time. At this point, the SFxT stuff was more interesting, because at least we were getting new information about a game still being updated and taken care of. Why has Capcom given up on Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3? They hint at it being Marvel's fault. 1 of the questions asked was about if Marvel being acquired by Disney has hindered them working together. No. Was the answer. I belive Marvel wants to move on. I don't think we'll see a Marvel VS Capcom 4 anytime soon. If this genre ever went the way of COD or Maddens, the fall of the fighting games would be worse than the 90's. There are already too many games competing in the fighting game genre. They should just add more characters, but it was also confirmed during this panel that there will be no more new characters for UMvC3.
Basically Capcom is done with the game. They are working on something, but can't say. Darkstalkers Jimmy! All the signs point to it. I even got an inside tip that Capcom will be unveiling something big next week at SDCC. Darkstalkers Jimmy! I've been calling this for months. Vampy is going to be there, contract by Capcom to appear in cosplay as Felicia. Ono-san will be there and it was in Comic-Con 2012 where he showed us SFxT for the first time. All signs point to something new. Darkstalkers Jimmy! I'm over this. I'll be there and I'll let you know first hand.
4PM Guano Pool. Well it was actually like 3:42PM and we were just standing in front of the SFxT vita display. The display was completely empty. That's what's up with the Vita and the SFxT. As we chatted Ruin appeared out of the corner of my eye. Early in the week Ruin and I had a conversation about leveling up earlier this week. Some didn't approve of my comments, but I think Ruin understood what I was trying to say after we twated each other on the tweeter. So I said to him what's up and who I was. We hugged it out. That's right, we hugged it out in the middle of EVO 2012. Keeping it gangsta. I want to help Las Vegas get stronger in the FGC. Vegas Tech is what I've been saying! Ruin gets it, I want to help improve the seen. We had a quick chat, he doesn't want me to film is Marvel play tomorrow, but is cool with me filming the KOF. I want to see Ruin play KOF, but I want to cheer on Vicko on as well and capture his play. We'll have to see what happens tomorrow and get as much footage as possible.
Bumped into Cujo Kate while still waiting for Guano. I think that's how it spells. She was dressed as Vega. She remembered us as soon as she saw BatRastered towering over her. She started to tell me about her matches in the morning. She had an AM pool. Welcome to EVO. Tomorrow she has an 8AM Street Fighter X Tekken pool. SFxT lol. Anyway back to her matches in the morning. She was telling me about frame traps and wake up super and Vega moves I'd never heard of. I'm praying to god I wouldn't have to open my moth and react in anyway like I knew what she was talking about. I'm really bad with SF4. BatRastered was asking what are Cammy's moves and I told him I didn't know. So I hope I didn't embarrass myself with Kate too much. She said she'd be back tomorrow as Spider Woman. I'll try to get a picture. Here's a pic of her as Vega.
Guano finally got into his pool and played DLimit. DLimit used Guile. Guile VS Ken. Guano gave a few too many free uppercuts that allowed DLimit to get the upper hand. Well that's how I remember it right now. I'll upload some videos in a few days and we can all decide.
The day was done at this point. I came home and started to write all this nonsense. I have no idea what was written above really. I've had a few beers and some chicken. Now it's time to do the podcast. Thanks to everyone we ran into today. Had a great day at EVO Day 1. Gonna finish watching these quarterfinals and record the podcast. Vote, Comment and Share. EVO's Mr. Wizard announces infinite combos will be allowed in Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 at the big tournament. Videos show more than 1 character has one. Will there be more to come?
TAC = Team Ariel Combo.
TAC Infinite combos will be legal at EVO according to this Tweet from EVO director Mr. Wizard.
Here's what it looks like.
Can you even see it? I certainly don't have a clue what is happening. Phoenix tags Magneto back in and Magneto can start his infinite. Apparently there's a moment where you can escape if you have the right character.
This is something that isn't a glitch. This is something that requires technique and specific characters to do.
Justin Wong said: "That is cheap cause Magneto has one too, so lots of characters might have it." - That quote is from EventHubs
Low and behold ...
Marvel is the Touch of Death. Shout out to UltraChenTV for that one liner. The winner of EVO could be the Jimmy who has something like this mastered with whatever else they've already mastered in the realm of cheese with Ultimate. Marvel is so full of cheese. FnJimmy had a great line last night while were playing and Hsien-ko kinda froze up for a second and he said "See the computer can't even handle your cheesy bullshit anymore." We're going to see a lot of attempts at this infinite thing, only the best will move forward. If an Infinite Combo wins the tournament and if the winner of the tournament is Japanese, they will probably riot. U.S.A.! U.S.A.!
Where is Filipino Champs take on this?
Marvel is a lot of the same, even though all of the characters are very different and have unique styles. Core gameplay features like TACs, Supers, Launching are all the same for all the characters. Now some might be completely different features, like not all characters can fly. I think this TAC infinite thing falls under most characters in the game can do something like this. Whether or not the human player can execute it or not, we'll see at EVO.
Well what do you think? Ban or not ban? Ban glitches, not skill, that's my take. Vote, Comment and Share. Don't be a Jimmy!
New fight stick to debut at EVO 2012. Exclusive EVO graphics. More info coming to an FGC event near you!
Well it looks like you might have a reason to spend 200 bucks on a new fight stick at EVO. No word on how limited this stick will be. In fact no word at all, MarkMan just dangling this in front of us on the Twitter. I'm hoping it's one of those VS sticks like the Street Fighter X Tekken stick. I really want one of those, but I don't want the SFxT graphics on it. This EVO limited edition version sounds pimpin'!
So our Goddess of the night Princess Luna was at EVO 2012 to check out the fighting demos and matches.

A bunch of new Fight Sticks will be available at EVO, some with very few limited amounts. Also Mad Catz now has an iPhone case. Hold your applause. Exclusive shirts too.
EVO 2012 competitor shirt. I'm pretty sure you will only get this if you are playing in the tournament.
Self explanatory iPhone case. Don't be a Jimmy!
Virtua Fighter 5 PROMO only fight stick. Looks like the winner of this side tournament is going to get this stick. There might also be a chance to win one. Somehow.
Persona 4 Arena PROMO only fight stick. So probably the same thing, win a side tournament or win a raffle. Not sure what the promo only thing means to these Jimmys.
And finally the EVO fight stick for 2012. Full on exclusive only 300 available. If you want one of these you better be at EVO day 1 in line at the Mad Catz booth to pick one up. These are gonna go fast.
Sorry about the black bars Jimmys, the Mad Catz doesn't have any sort of professional press site and I got all these images and info from the Mark Man twitter. Vote, Comment and Share. Don't be a Jimmy!

For the first time ever, EVO will charge a fee to get into the main ballroom on the last day for grand finals.
If you're coming to Las Vegas for EVO just to watch, you're gonna need an extra $50 to watch the grand finals on Sunday. Don't worry there's a free room with the live stream on a big screen. It's not that big of a deal right? You get a free t-shirt too. Plus if you're entered into any of the tournaments, you will get a badge, so that's cool.
Here are the main changes to the registration.
- On Sunday, the day of all the tournament finals, we will require an attendee badge to enter the main ballroom. To purchase an attendee badge, head to evo.shoryuken.com. If you’re already registered to compete at Evo, you will get a badge, so don’t worry.
- If you’re not playing in any of the tournaments and want to get into the main ballroom on Sunday, you still need to buy an attendee pass. With your pass you’ll also get an Evo T-Shirt.
- We are selling only enough badges to meet the capacity of the ballroom. Once we are sold out, that’s it.
- Since this is new information, we are extending the early-bird registration price for one week, until May 15th.
- We’re requiring sponsors with booths to pack it up Saturday night so we can make as much space as possible for spectators, and to give the finalists the respect and focus their skills deserve.
- On Sunday we will book an extra room for those in attendance without badges, where they can watch the stream together on a big screen, for free. But if you want to watch in the main room, we need you to purchase a badge

I was lucky enough to get this match on tape. I bumped into SpeedBrkr and he let me know he had Marn in the first round.

Record attendance and huge cash prizes (over $100,000 in total payouts) set the stage for the biggest and baddest Fighting Game Community championships ever at Evo 2012.
Evo 2012 will be held July 6 – 8 at the Las Vegas Caesars Palace Hotel and Casino. The event is open to the public on July 6th and 7th. The whole thing will be broadcast on twitch.tv so if you can't make it, be sure to tune in.
With companies like Capcom and Warner Bros. chipping in huge bonuses to the prize pool, we will see some amazing prizes this year, over $100,000 total!
Here are the prize pools for the Evo 2012 tournaments. All tournaments pay out to the top 8 finishers.
- $25,000 Super Street Fighter IV, Arcade Edition 2012
- $23,000 Mortal Kombat 9
- $15,000 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- $15,000 for Sega’s Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown event (BYOC event)
- $11,000 King of Fighters XIII
- $9,000 Street Fighter X Tekken
- $5,000 Soul Calibur V
That's some big money, but you'll have to beat some stiff competition from over 40 countries to win it. By my count of the brackets there are over 1500 entrants in the SSFIVAE tournament alone (and over 1200 in the UMvC3)!
Gouki.com will be in attendance so be on the lookout for us if you are there!
Unfortunately I didn't get to play myself, but I did get a little bit on tape for all the Gouki.com Bronies.

The video ends with a hand shake and bow from Champ. Keeping it classy!
Champ was on a tear all night and was feeling himself way early on as seen in this video above.

GoukiJones and BatRastered got to play DiveKick at EVO 2012. Read on for some hands-on goodness.
DiveKick started out as a great idea... Check out this preview video if you haven't seen it already:
That was an awesome spoof of the community, the games, the controllers... everything. 2 buttons, 2 characters. I thought it was awesome. It also looked complete (or at least very nearly). They could've sold this as an iPhone/iPad game no problem.
Since then, they've added a few new characters. There's a "wolverine" (not to be confused with the Marvel character) and a "Mr. N" spoof of Marn.
Now they're doing a kickstarter and even more characters will be added... each with slightly different jumps and kicks I guess. Yawn... This was so funny 2 months ago, but the joke is over now and I don't really care to have a serious DiveKick game at home. I don't see it selling very much at this point (let alone late Fall when it actually gets released).
Anyway, I had a chance to play it at EVO... here's me playing against a wolverine :
Is this the first double KO caught on tape? It didn't count as a round at all! Later on in the match I figured out that pressing kick first makes you jump backwards. My overall feeling though was that this would make a great party game and not much more. It has some insider jokes for the FGC, but like I said before, it's a bit stale now. If they take the game too seriously, they'll just end up competing with the SSF4AE and UMvC3's of the world and let's be real, I'm gonna play the full-on games at that point. I can't say I'm too hyped for this at this point... if it was already out with the two OG characters, Dive and Kick, and cost a few bucks I would've probably already bought it, played it, and forgotten about it. (Just like SFxT! Hey-o!)
Bonus video: Here's GoukiJones as "Dive" winning a match against wolverine.
