E3 2010 Preview Part One

By: jalexbrown May 6, 2010 | 6 Comments

Check out my first of a couple articles laying out what E3 2010 might look like.

I don’t need to tell you that E3 is upon us.  It’s that time of the year again where rumors and speculation run rampant; everyone wants to get their say in what the next E3 will hold.  I’m not going to take too much time to indulge in speculation, although I admittedly might throw a claim or two that is sheerly based on my own guesswork, but most of what I’m going to assume we’ll see at E3 is based on announcements made and things saw at last year’s E3.

So the big three: Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.  These are probably the guys you most want to see, because they usually set the stage for all the awesome exclusives.  And I’d say everyone can rejoice, because we’ve got good reason to believe that all three will be showing some slick exclusives and brand new things.

First, let’s look at Nintendo.  I broke news on Gouki about the Nintendo 3DS, and since it’s been officially confirmed, I see every reason to believe we’ll see Nintendo showing off their plans for the 3DS launch.  As far as what properties could be present at the 3DS launch is anyone’s guess at this point, but I don’t think expecting to see a new Mario or Zelda 3DS is too far out of the realm of possibility.  Aside from that we could potentially get a new Pokemon game (perhaps the rumored Pokemon Black/White) or a portable Super Smash Brothers game (they must know that the fans have been asking for it).  And speaking of Zelda, I’m expecting to see some Zelda Wii stuff on display as well, and possibly even some Metroid: Other M stuff since it got a pushed-back release date.  There is some speculation about seeing a Wii HD, but I have a feeling that no such announcement will come from Nintendo at this year’s E3; I think the 3DS will be enough from a hardware perspective.

Let’s move on to Microsoft.  Last year Microsoft unveiled Natal; this year I expect them to kick up the presentations twofold and probably put it out for demo as well.  Microsoft knows how skeptical people have been since last year’s Milo presentation, so they might take the perfect opportunity to comfort all of the Natal naysayers.  But Natal won’t really be the big fish in the sea, because that will go to Halo Reach and Fable 3.  Both of these games are getting a spectacular amount of hype, and much like Natal both titles have a fair amount of naysayers.  Microsoft, Lionhead, and Bungie will be a force to be reckoned with.  I’m expecting a campaign demo for Halo Reach (the only thing I can imagine since the multiplayer is already in private beta), and some sort of hands-on for Fable 3 (perhaps showing off the Natal features).  I also wonder if Microsoft won’t maybe have a trailer for Mass Effect 3 in store; I’d say it’s a strong possibility.

Out of the members of the big three, we really know the least about what Sony’s got going on.  With the exception of Move, most of what they showed off last year will be out by this year’s E3.  At least we can safely assume that Move will out for demonstration, and I’m sure Sony will be pushing hype on a bunch of titles that will use it.  I can imagine that we’ll maybe get to see a trailer for Resistance 3 (after the whole billboard deal was circulated), and perhaps even LittleBigPlanet 2 (a rumor, I’m afraid).  But there is a ray of sunshine in all of this: there are endless possibilities for franchises that Sony could take interest in revisiting or moving to the PS3, far more than I could consider listing.  So I guess what I’m admitting is that Sony’s show will be the most up-in-the-air, but I’m optimistic that they have some great surprises in store.

So I think that’s going to wrap up part one of my E3 preview.  Keep reading, because I should get around to getting some third-party speculations up before too long.  In the meantime don’t forget to make Gouki one of your stops for E3 coverage and information!

NBA Jam is back Jimmy!

NBA Jam is back with the addition of some preset waggles and some updated graphics. Other than that, it's exactly what you remember from 1997.

Yes. I know something about the dame 4th Spider-Man in Shattered Dimensions.

I type for your mom. I make videos for Gouki.com.

Final Fantasy XIV Drunken hands on

By: goukijones Jun 26, 2010 | 5 Comments

FNJimmy and I got a little private time with Final Fantasy XIV in 3D, with my best friend Jack Daniels.

FNJimmy and I got into the private hands on room of Final Fantasy XIV. I played it in 3D and let me just say it looks absolutely amazing. The problem with 3D gaming of course (and this isn’t the only time you’re going to hear me say this) I don’t want to have a $5000 dollar set up to play it. The glasses and 3D on screen were not abrasive at all. Although I don’t know how I would feel after playing Final Fantasy for XIV umpteen hours.

As far as the actual gameplay of Final Fantasy XIV it was just like Final Fantasy XI, I’m afraid that this game may just be a graphical update. I ran through the town and saw the shops and few NPC’s all very familiar to anyone that has played FFXI. When I got out into the field with a group to fight some enemies, again felt just like FFXI.

Final Fantasy XIV or Star Wars The Old Republic? The variables here would be release dates, friends online, monthly pricing, and system. I don’t know when either game is coming out for sure, but I’ll be giving both a try when they are released. I think my friends online are gonna be split. Whoever has the cheaper service is just gonna receive bonus points.  As far as systems go, I know I’ll be starting either one on the PC so I guess that does matter. Here’s a short clip of FNJimmy and myself hands on with Jack Daniels errrrrrrr Final Fantasy XIV.

This is a video that has been circulating the net about the difference between the alpha and beta versions of Final Fantasy XIV. Hello?! WTF? When the game is actually released,  we won’t be playing either version, so who cares? The graphics are nice though.

This is the North American E3 2010 Trailer. Makes my nipples hard Jimmy.

Hands on with Vanquish

By: BatRastered Jun 21, 2010 | 1 Comments

I use every bullet I have on the first boss...

vanquish screenshot

I played the first level of Vanquish at E3. The game is really smooth. It plays like Gears of War on speed. You mostly rely on cover, but you can move so fast from one to the next and shuffle around behind it. The graphics look great and the control is spot on when moving around. I had a little bit of trouble with the targetting mechanic as it didn't "pop and lock" when I held down the aim button like most western shooters I'm used to (and I think the sensitivity was dialed way up from where I like it).

My only dissapointment was the lack of multiplayer despite the fact that you are rolling with a squad. I'm still interested in playing this though.

Check out this quick video of me playing Vanquish at Sega's E3 booth.

Nintendo press conference

By: jalexbrown Jun 15, 2010 | 2 Comments

My impressions of Nintendo's keynote inside.

Okay, so I already posted a story about the Zelda announcement that headed Nintendo's keynote.  Since I already talked about that, I'll invite you jump to that article instead of me having to talk about it again.  So please, feel free to go read it and then come back - but please come back, because otherwise you will miss some incredible announcements.

You back?  Okay,  Good.

After Skyward Sword, Nintendo immediately went on to show a trailer for Mario Sports Mix.  I'm not a big fan of the Mario sports games of the past - but being on the Wii and having a mixture of sports in the same game, this actually looks pretty awesome.  There was a nice mix of sports including soccer, basketball, and volleyball.  And while Mario Sports Mix wasn't quite jaw-dropping, it was still a really nice announcement just the same.  Mario Sports Mix will be out in 2011.

Should I skip Wii Party?  If you take Mario Party and replace the Mario characters with Miis, then you've got Wii Party.  I just don't get it.  But oh well, I'm not going to dwell on it.

Just Dance 2...pass.

Next was a trailer for Golden Sun: Dark Dawn.  The trailer looked amazing.  This is classic JRPG that I've been wanting on the DS.  I'm really pumped about this game - a lot more than I expected to be prior to Nintendo's keynote.  I'm just...wow, this is going to be amazing.  If you're a Golden Sun fan, or just a JRPG fan in general, then you have to check this game out.  It will be out during the holiday season of 2010.

Goldeneye 007 Wii was the next announcement.  Now, I must say: the trailer - it looked like utter crap.  The visuals here were beyond disappointing, and the gameplay didn't really look like anything all that amazing.  Anyone that has played a Wii first-person shooter will already know that this probably won't end up very well, but still...it's Goldeneye, so it's definitely going to be a big deal for a lot of people.  It comes out during the holiday season of 2010.

Warren Spector came out to commentate on an Epic Mickey demo.  At first I was pretty skeptical; the beginning of the demo looked pretty lame.  But then Mickey jumped into a movie screen, and it went into a side-scrolling level themed after the Steamboat Willy cartoon - complete with black and white visuals.  At that point I was interested, but I really wish that the whole game was going to be 2D platforming; the 3D areas still looked like boring garbage.

The trailer for Kirby's Epic Yarn was...well, I'm not really sure what to say about it.  It's not my cup of tea - I can say that much for certain.  I think that the art style is charming enough to some people, but I just wasn't feeling it.  A Kirby fan might be into this; since I'm not a Kerby fan, I can't say much about this - except that it comes out in the fall of 2010.

There was a new trailer for Metroid: Other M that makes it look even better than it did last year.  The action looks to be amazingly smooth and fresh.  I think Metroid: Other M has a lot of potential to be amazing.  Team Ninja and Nintendo together - at first I was pretty skeptical, but now that I've seen more of it in action, I think it could just blow a lot of people's minds.  And the best part is the release date: August 31 of this year.

And then...and then...oh man, I think I'm going to faint!  Donkey...Kong...Country...Returns!  They showed off a trailer of this game, and I immediately had a nostaligic geek-out moment.  I literally jumped out of my chair in excitement.  The premise is that they're basically taking Donkey Kong Country and giving it the New Super Mario Brothers Wii treatment - and let me tell you something: it looks amazing!  As hard as it is for me to believe, this announcement totally owned Nintendo's keynote for me hands-down.  And it's coming out this year!!!  I'm...*passes out*

Nintendo revealed what Project Nora really was - Kid Icarus Uprising.  This is going to be a 3DS game.  The trailer looked really intriguing and fun.  And if the trailer gameplay is really any indication, then the 3DS is capable of some truly amazing graphics - because these looked almost like Wii graphics; I kid you not.  I'm...well, this could be really good.  I'm paying attention Nintendo; wow me.

The end of the keynote was the announcement of the actual Nintendo 3DS.  The whole "3D without glasses" concept was a bit overplayed, and unfortunately watching the keynotes on television offer you no way to see how this will actually look.  But we know that all you care about is the games, and Nintendo chose to focus on the third-party with a crapload of fantastic third-party titles in development:  DJ Hero 3D, Kingdom Hearts 3DS, Saint's Row 3DS, Madden and FIFA for 3DS, Resident Evil 3DS, Batman 3DS, Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy, Ridge Racer 3DS, and...Metal Gear Solid 3DS(!!!).  Nintendo wasn't telling us anything about these games besides the fact that they're in development, but that's undeniably an amazing lineup of third-party games.  The only first-party that Nintendo mentioned was the aforementioned Kid Icarus Uprising and Nintendogs + Cats.  If Nintendo can keep a strong focus on the third-party, than the 3DS could end up being a real winner.

So Nintendo's conference was amazing - no need to tell you that.  Nintendo basically made all of the announcements that we've been speculating about for the last two or three years.  Bravo Nintendo.

Hands on with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

By: BatRastered Jun 21, 2010 | 7 Comments

Wolves and bigger wolves get whipped and stabbed...

I had a chance to play Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for a short while at Konami's E3 booth. The game brings Castlevania into the current generation with a play style similar to the God of War series. The whip action controls well and throwing daggers is quick and easy. The only enemies I got to fight were werewolves and larger werewolves that were in turn ridden by the smaller ones. Weird.  You can pull off some neat combos with the different whip attacks and you can unlock new moves as you progress through the game. The cutscenes are skippable but they do feature the voice of Patrick Stewart. Whatever, this being a Kojima game, I can see some of these scenes being on the long side, so as long as I can skip, I'm happy.

Take a look at me playing Castlevania at E3.

Vlog #14 E3 2010 press conference review

By: goukijones Jul 1, 2010 | 10 Comments

Introducing BatRastered, with special guests FNJimmy and Choke. Also special appearances by Major Nelson, StarSlay3r, Geoff Keighley, and gaming legend Adam Sessler.

Filmed just one week removed from E3 2010 the Gouki.com staff looks back at the E3 2010 press conferences. Introducing BatRastered, with special guests FNJimmy and Choke. Also special appearances by Major Nelson, StarSlay3r, Geoff Keighley, and gaming legend Adam Sessler. This non-stop romp the E3 press conferences is a brutal realization that these major corporations barely know how to entertain. EA's press conference had the most potential entertainment wise just hoping that Joel Mchale might just say something crazy. Which almost happened, but he seemed reserved most of the time and had to read very specific lines at some point. Sony lost points because Jack Tretton straight up says he didn't want Kevin Butler hosting because of his own EGO. WTF? So bore us to death.

Then there's the games which is mostly what this is about. Don't be a Jimmy! Enjoy Vlog #14 E3 2010 press conference review.

Leave some comments Jimmy and like this story!! Thanks.

Batman The Brave and The Bold featuring FNJimmy

By: goukijones Jun 21, 2010 | 4 Comments

Batman beat-em up game FTW!!

batman the brave and the bold screenshot

We only got a few minutes to play the game. Adam from developer WayForward[too far forward, for FNJImmy] was there to help us out. The game is a simple beat-em up like classic Ninja Turtles games. Batman and depending on the level/stage, Batman’s partner will be different. Theres TONS of weapons and gadgets and power-ups. You can throw each other into bad guys, you can throw bad guys and then catch and pwn them from your partner.

batman the brave and the bold screenshot

Here’s where it gets crazy, Adam pulls out a Nintendo DS and drops into the game on the fly with Bat-mite. First he starts healing and helping Jimmy and I, then he starts dropping classic Warner Bros. Acme anvils and 1 ton blocks onto our domes. So Bat-mite can be played as helpful or annoying. Cool ad on and the fact that he can just drop in and out is really cool. Also when you’re playing single player, second player can also jump in and out on the fly. Gotta pee, like FNJimmy piss pants? Drop out real quick and let the computer play. Hell I’ll probably have a better chance. Enough of this, watch the video featuring FNJimmy.

Fallout New Vegas gameplay with Josh Sawyer

By: goukijones Jun 20, 2010 | 6 Comments

I get like 47 seconds with Josh Sawyer, before we're told to stop filming. Don't worry I'll tell you more about our conversation.

Fallout New Vegas looks just like Fallout 3, so graphics aren't the issue here. Controls felt the same to me; it was very easy to jump back into it. Josh Sawyer is the game’s Project Director and he was there to answer all of my questions and walk me through a quick experience in Fallout New Vegas. As I grab the controller I start to punch and fight the first guy I see. I didn’t know that I was in a casino at this point and I had no weapons. I was raiped by security and was quickly dead. Josh sighed and told me to hit load, we have to start all over again. So here we go from the beginning of the press demo.

The game loads up just in-side Las Vegas on the strip. Doesn’t look anything like the Vegas I know, but I understand that 200 years in the future it should look completely different. They’re always blowing shit up in Las Vegas. I can’t remember clearly what happened next, I began to walk around the city and I saw someone I wanted to punch again. Before Josh could stop me I had already decked the Ceaser’s Legion security guard and then I died again. Ok, push start and load the last game. Josh at this point wanted to strangle me for sure.

Now we head right over to the casino, so he could show me the gambling. Table games and slot machines and if you win too much, the casino will boot you out. Cool. Now I want to go shoot some Jimmys.

So we load up a mission. Typical Fallout 3 mission style. Go talk to this Jimmy, go to this spot, go find this Jimmy, go shoot these Jimmys, pick up the thing, return the thing, talk to the Jimmy that originally gave you the mission and mission complete. Watch the video. It’s Fallout New Vegas from E3 2010 with Josh Sawyer.
