Beast mode activated: an Infamous 2 review

The beast is coming, will you be able to defeat him, will you even try? These are the kinds of choices you can make in infamous 2.

Infamous 2 picks up right where Infamous left off. Cole is now powered up and waiting to take on the beast. Cole and his gang plan to head to New Marais (aka New Orleans) to pick up some new powers before the big fight, but the beast has other plans. If you finished the first Infamous, you can continue your story as either good or evil and get some bonus XP, extra electric power and a karmic boost. If you finished both story lines, you get to choose which one to continue. It’s a nice touch and it works great.

I was late to the Infamous party; I didn’t play it until it was free as part of the PSN welcome back program (check out my pro tips). On the plus side, that means I played Infamous right before playing the sequel. As such, two things really stuck out right from the get-go. First, they changed voice actors for Cole, the main character in the game. (I didn’t think that was a good sign.) And second, the game looked a lot better. Oh yeah, and for some reason Sucker Punch thought it’d be funny to change the pick up an item/interaction button from triangle to R1... no reason, just different. That screwed me up big time early on.

The Infamous 2 engine has been reworked an includes some really impressive updates including real-time in-engine cut scenes (all of which are skippable now, yeah!) destructible elements and big HUGE enemies. The new engine also supports user generated content (UGC), but more on that later.

Aside from the typical destructible cover (boxes and such) there are huge verandas that you can take out with a few well placed grenades. This has the added benefit of taking care of any baddies standing on or below the porch. Giant fuel tanks and silos can be blown up along with pedestrian bridges and all sorts of stuff I didn’t expect. (There’s no full scale building demolition though.)

Infamous 2 is a bit tougher than its predecessor, mostly because it is more stingy with the electricity. You no longer gain power from grinding on wires; they’re solely for transportation now. Your standard lightning bolt (R1) also now consumes some juice. You’ll have to be a bit more strategic if you don’t want to run out of power now, especially in powered down areas of the city. To make up for the standard bolt taking power, Sucker Punch has improved the melee by giving Cole a weapon, dubbed “the Amp”, it is an electrified tuning-fork looking device that you swing at the baddies to clear them out. Unfortunately for Cole, the Amp is no match for a gun, and many of the bad guys (even early on) have guns. Jumping into a gang of four or five jimmies with guns and swinging your stick around is akin to suicide. There’s also a section of the city that’s partially flooded, forcing you to stick to the rooftops as water and electricity are a bad mix.

My first OMG moment came when I was introduced to the Devourer, a giant swamp creature that will chase you through the streets and give you your first real challenge in the game. It’s not a boss, just a really big, strong enemy. There are also militia helicopters and giant Ice Titans to contend with (plus a couple of REALLY GIANT surprise enemies). Sadly, none of these big baddies are available in the mission editor for the UGC, so many of the user created missions end up being swarms of small enemies. Pro Tip: You can enter the UGC mission creator, fly to any point in the map, and finally exit the creator which will essentially fast travel Cole to wherever you want to be.

One of my complaints about the first game was that no matter which side of the karmic scale you were on, the story played out the same way. This made the good/evil choices largely irrelevant (except as to which powers you had). Infamous 2 has no such problem, the ending (not just the cut scenes, but the game play and bosses) is completely different for good Cole and evil Cole. Without giving too much away, Infamous 2 is the only game I can think of where the evil ending seems more like the real ending to me. The game is called “infamous” after all!

Aside from the lack of large enemies is the UGC, there are a couple of other, minor issues with Infamous 2. Instead of taking you into the map screen after completing a mission (as Infamous did), Infamous 2 puts a mission summary on the right of the screen, while leaving you in control of Cole. This sounds good in theory, but in practice the summary covers up your mini-map and for some reason hides your target reticule. If there are any bad guys left alive in the area when you finish a mission, you will have a tough time dealing with them in that condition. My advice is to just run away until the summary is off the screen and your reticule is back. Another issue occurs when you defeat one of the larger enemies. Infamous 2 likes to give them a cinematic death, this takes control away from you to show you the bad guy going down in slow motion even if they weren’t the last active enemy and you are still in the middle of a fire fight. Totally not cool.

In the first Infamous, all of your powers could be upgraded 3 times and they became more and more useful each time. In Infamous 2, instead of simply upgrading the power, you unlock variations on the power (a triple shot, or spread version of the basic bolt for instance). Some of these are cool, some are not, but I never felt like I was getting more powerful, just different, which was a shame.

You still collect blast shards to increase you electricity storage, they are scattered all over the city just as before, you’d really have to try to not see them and get at least 50% of them. As the story progresses, you are joined by two conduit accomplices, one good and one evil and you can choose which side missions to do, in addition to some main story decisions that will drastically affect your karma.

Overall, Infamous 2 is a fun game with tons of stuff to do. You’ll want to play through it twice, which is quite a bit of game play. Unfortunately the UGC doesn’t keep the replay value as high as promised due to the omission of the larger enemies. Still, I got a couple of weeks of value out of this game and enjoyed myself while playing it so BUY IT.

Now that we're well into the new year it's time to get started with SAVING MONEY ON VIDEO GAMES. There's a couple of games with great coupons and bonus DLC. I always say, IF you gotta pay full price at least make sure you're getting something for free with it. Like the MvC3 console sticker decals that nobody cares about. lol. Demon’s Souls is Stupid’s Shits

You mean to tell me this game is not back and forth, back and forth, trial and error? You’re on drugs.

Day 1

I’ve read everything online about this game and how you are going to be either one way or the other about this game. You’re either gonna love it or hate it. I jumped in with an open mind and wanted to play this game. I did the character creation screen and with a hundred different faces to choose from and edit them all the way down the width of the chin is serious. I should have realized then this game is serious. The random face generator is pretty funny actually, especially if you just click the as a woman. I’ve never seen such ugly ass women in my life. Feminists have to be losing their minds over this. Then there’s a bar where you can change the face to manlier or more womanly … scary!

After I selected my class, Wanderer which is one of ten to choose from. I began the tutorial. All the fighting buttons are the triggers and easy to get used to. I kept getting the main action button confused with the heal button and the game would let me heal myself when I already have full health and waste a heal. This becomes a nightmare later on. (SPOILER) I died during the tutorial, oh wait I was supposed to.

I checked out the Nexus, which is the hub for weapons and storage and stuff, basically your home base. Once I figured out how to get out of there and fight the heat was on Jimmy! I get to the first world and I start climbing the steps and fighting demons. I died a few times and started to run low on heals. Then I realized it, I was dying, being sent back the ABSOLUTE beginning of the level all my heals were gone and all the souls I’ve collected. Frustration ensues. I got absolutely nowhere the first day.  

Day 2

So I started over so I could focus on saving all my heals and try to take my time with the game.  

Rei Puerto says “You have to take your time, slow and steady wins the race.”  

Yes, yes slow and steady ok. So I begin to take my time and kill enemies slowly and try to get through the game. I pick up a new sword, is it good, is it better than the one I have. I DON’T KNOW, the symbols for what the weapons and armor do are some encrypted hieroglyphic bullshit! I text Rei again and tell him I don’t know what the fuck is going on in this game.  

He replies “I’m going to send you a voice message so you can hear the passion in my voice.” A few seconds later I get a monotone voice mail. “Ok so the trick with Demon’s Souls is you have understand the mechanics.”  

Yes, yes! What the fuck are the mechanics?  

I played a little bit more after that, figured out how to repair my weapons and armor, since I was taking such a beating. I don’t think day 3 will happen anytime soon, because Dragon Age: Origins is released today.  

For some reason I couldn’t find this game at my local Best Buy, Toys R Us, Target, and nobody has this game. Maybe because somebody else knows people would be returning this shit on the regular. Now … If you are hardcore JRPG Jimmy you need to check this out. I know people are enjoying this game. I just don’t think this a game for me.

As you may have seen in the news the past few weeks, PlayStation Network has been down. After some recent attacks on Sony's network, they shut everything down and built the system back up. Here is what users will get for the unfortunate wait...

      

    "Welcome Back" Appreciation Program has been announced to make up for the PSN downtime. Upon PSN's return sometime this week, this is what the program gives us...

  • Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon. (AWESOME! Could just be wallpapers though, will update when info comes in)
  • All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service. ( YO AWESOME! I'm not a fan of ps+ but free is free! )

ModNation Racers check my stats

I'm racing like the beta just ended yesterday. I'm officially starting the Gouki.com racing group. Go to my profile to get my PSN ID.

I couldn't get this game out of the package fast enough. First of all I got it @bestbuy for $26.74. Stolen! How? You are asking yourself right now. Well I had $35 in coupons from games like Final Fantasy XIII and Mass Effect 2 and whatever games I've purchased from Best Buy over the last couple of months.

ModNation Racers is an absolute blast. Old school Mario Kart racing all the way. That's the bottom line to be loving this game so much. It feels so much like Mario Kart 64 which is my favorite Mario Kart of all time!  The sliding in the kart now is updated with being able to boost while you slide and that makes yuo go even faster. You can put a shield up that will block most enemy weapons locked on to you. You can sideswipe Jimmys and do stunts when you fly high through the air. @batrastered ... Yes, it still takes a while for it to load up the races, but it is totally worth every second once they load. Shit, I've managed to write half this story waiting for it to load up. I don't care, it's great for me to have it on, sit in a XP lobby and while I'm waiting for races to load up, I'm working on the computer. Pwn! Still getting booted from races and still getting booted from just the servers in the ModSpot. That sucks, I hope that improves because today is the first day and hopefully the servers ARE busy. No custom controls or what I could find so far. The menus are very confusing. I can't even party up with my friends yet, somebody help me. From what it looks like so far is that there is a real money shop in game to buy mods for your kart or your Jimmy. Jimmy don't like paying for DLC! The only free DLC I got was a Sack Boy nubfarm skin mod and cardboard kart. Garbage! I wanted the Drake! Waiting this entire story now for a race. I don't care, I love the thrill. C'mon start up another!!! Oh by the way still ... SERIOUSLY DAMAGING SCREEN BURN EFFECT. sad face.

God of War III Review

Does Kratos get what he wants?

You’ll just have to buy, play, and find out. Here we are. A game developed from Sony Santa Monica, and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The final chapter in the Kratos’ God of War’s series, a story of vengeance, betrayal, and revenge. Let’s break it down to help those that are into the main highlights.

Story: The first two God of War games were intense, engrossing, and interactive. Nothing has changed. Kratos is still looking for his revenge for the Gods, which have betrayed him and their words. It start off where GoW2’s cliff hanger and what a way to start off! You’re on top of a Titan, climbing Mountain Olympus, looking to end the life of Zeus. With four main Gods and other Titan, the story keeps you wanting more. Why does Zeus do the things he does? Why does Gaia help Kratos? Why does Kratos do the thing he does? And it goes on! You’ll be emerresed in this telling of tale.


Gameplay: This is an honest, to bare bones, hack and slash, action adventure. But with massive substance to separate its self from the rest of its kind. With normal attack, heavy attack, magic, magic specific weapons, moves, combo to moves, you’ll be sure to hit 1000 hit combo with understanding of both kind. The platforming segment are good with no sense of ANY kind of delay. Each weapon has it’s own magic, so you won’t have to fumble around looking for the magic. Each weapon can be upgraded numerous times, about five. Each giving you new combo skill and magic. So points/orbs that you get from defeating from enemy, will increase your death count.

Graphics: Alright you graphic whores, here is the reason you bought this George Forman grill look alike. The game runs smooth with little to no hickups! The detail in some animal are believable that you think the team, of Santa Monica Studio, have met the fearsome beast! Kratos is fully detailed to the teeth. I mean you can see when he gets man and went he gets pissed!! The fights in the backgrounds in certain sections, are a beautiful landscape of its own. In one section, you could be climbing a mountain and there will a moment went your jaw drops and say “Hoe S***! Damn!!”  The detail are insane even if you run it at 720P.

Sound: Blood, head being crushed, cries of you enemy, all checked and accounted for. The voice acting is fine enough to push you to hear more. Although this is where I’ll nip pick. After some combo executed, Kratos foot step seem to disappear. Maybe that’s just me not having Dolby Digital surround sound but still. That’s all I got for that.

Replayability: Yup. Keep playing this game a few more rounds. Once you beat the game, you can use some items that you couldn’t use the first time and it makes the game good. You have Titan mode, which you’ll die from as the game makes fun of you, and Challenge of Olympus. These modes will seriously test your skills as a gamer.

Verdict: Buy it! Buy the bloody thing. It will increase your testosterone level ten folds. You’ll grow hair on your chest and back. Don’t be a Jimmy!!

Twisted Metal + Mechs = Fuck Yeah!!!

I guess they decided we just weren't hyped enough.

Let me just start by saying, "Holy Shit!!!"

Sweet Tooth busts out a sick ass Mech and brings some hell to Dollface.  But two can play that game.  The chance to play as a bad ass mech in this game brings it up to a whole other level for me.  I was just short of drooling when I saw this.  If they offer this for everyone the game is going to be insane.  Hell if the mechs are only available in one mode of play I'll be fine with that.  This is a franchise that I have loved from the start and they are bringing out all the tricks to be relevant again. 

What else could we ask for?  Can you think of anything missing?  Or do you think they are trying to hard?

Killzone 3 In-Depth Class Overview: The Engineer

Member iorilamia has been addicted to the killzone 3 open multiplayer beta. The class iorilamia has been using most of the time is The Engineer. He took time to write a book about the Engineer class. Weapons, skills, gameplay and matchups vs others.

 

Basically the Engineer is one of the more underpowered classes in K3, but one team having one and the other not makes a huge difference. If you don't want to read all the details (because most of you don't own PS3 or just don't want to read), I have the basic information written up at the end ^_^

WEAPONS- Primary 

M224-1A LMG- Your basic machinegun. Tons of amo, long range, medium fire-speeds but extremely innacurate in far distance.
STA11 SMG- Way more acurate than the first gun and much faster firing speeds, but smaller clip and sucks even worse at far range, a definate medium range weapon.
STA3 LMG- The lord of all spraying and praying. EXTREMELY CLOSE range weapon that has shitty acurracy, but spills bullets out with an INSANE rate of fire. Run into a room with it and take out a group of jimmy's without even trying.

Secondary

STA18 Pistol -  Run of the mile pistol that works at close range with a decent rate of fire. Should kill within 4-5 well placed shots.
VC8 Shotgun Pistol - Definately nowhere near as good as the shotty, far less range and damage, but it is still a one shot kill when your directly infront of someone.
STA2 Battle Pistol - Grenade Launcher aka "noob tube" for u CoD fans. Well its not nooby in this game, grenades bounch like a mofo but the weapon does shoot the nades extremely far and accurate ; very good vs campers.

 

PRIMARY ABILITIES

Repair Tool – Repair damaged or destroyed ammunition dispensers, mounted guns, and automated turrets.
Repair Tool+  - Increases repair speed. (This is a MUST, the increased repair speed is insane and this is a fast-paced game, your gonna need it)
Repair Tool++  - Hack enemy placed turrets, transferring ownership until the engineer is killed or the turret is re-hacked. Stacks with previous abilities. (IMO this sucks ass. 9/10 your gonna die before you can just RUN UP to another engineers turret and hack it like your rambo, I haven't had much luck with this ability, but when I did, it allowed me to set up my own turret next to it.)

SECONDARY

 Sentry Turret  – Deploy a machine gun turret that will automatically target and fire at enemies in range.
 Sentry Turret +  - Turret's firing rate is increase and can be deployed twice as fast as before.
 Sentry Turret ++  - Deployed turrets can now track targets faster and are augmented with auto-fire rockets that fire every few seconds. ( LVL THIS SHIT UP AS FAST AS POSSIBLE! The Engineer felt like a struggle until the turret is fully lvled up, the turret dies too easily and its a sitting duck you the fire power is a must)

ENGINEERS ROLES IN THE TEAM / GAMEPLAY

Amo Deposites

The Engineer is your bro. Both teams have several amo crates that give you more grenades/mines than you spawn with and ofcourse more amo when you need it. You cannot use these unless a Engineer repeairs it (they are broken when the round starts) also if one team has a Engineer and the other doesn't, the one Engineer can destroy and take over the other teams amo deposits (or just capture them all in the start of the round). Before you go killing, Engineers need to repair the nearest Amo Depos.

Where and Why to use Turrets

The engineer ha several gameplay styles. To break it down we got the Camper, Aggresive and Security.

The Camper is self explanatory. Get your Turret in a corner while you wait in the other or next to it, firing at people coming near bye or outside. What makes it so effective is proximity mines. If you camp near a amo depo, you can have 3 mines constantly covering your blindspots and staircases, as soon as someone hits one you can constantly get more and more.

When your Aggresive (like me) you go out into the open, get your squishy turret (they do die easily) near a wall or crate giving you backup fire as you battle. It is effective because you can easily run back to heal him when injured. Also theirs MANY situations where I don't even notice a enemy but my Turret does, and I end up supporting him.

Security is great for your team. In almost any game-mode or objective while you go do your own thing, carefully place your Turret and proximity mines around the base/area.               

Heres the fun part (not too much in-game) MATCHUPS! How us Engineer deal with other classes/ get railed.

Vs Engineer- Longe range, the engineer using the first primary weapon wins, its more inacurate than the second range weapon but the range usually wins overall, and the damage. Close range is a toughy. The last Primary weapon is best at close ranges, but the second one almost being as good and better acurracy, all comes down to the player. but even if its a small hallway, the second primary wins, the third is just TOO innacurate. Whoever have the better turret obviously have a much bigger hand.

Vs Infiltrator- This sucks. Infiltrators maxed out Hide ability allows them to appear as a teamate to you and yor turret. Ontop of that if they kill you with brutal melee, they stay hidden. Basically they seak up on you, brutal melee and your turret still doesnt see them, then they kill it. If they use a gun and are close enoguh, HOPEFULLY your turret turns around and fire a rocket first thing. The weapons matchup sucks aswell. Their primary eapon, an actual shotgun is way better than your pistol shotgun, and rapes you close range easily. They share the same secondary weapon as you but their last weapon makes the long range difference. A 5-burst red dot sight rifle, is way more superior than the engineers slow inacurate long range machine gun. Best thing you can do is be medium range while your turret is being a bro and helping you out, try to target them before they get close (it appears as red)

Vs Marksman - Marksman and Infiltrator are "top of the tier list" in a way. The marksman can be invisible while shooting at you, only appearing when killing or mortally wounding. So ofcourse when invisible, their turret can't see them, and if they do, the turrets slow ass moving rockets should be easy for a long range camper to dodge along with the turrets regular bullets. All of the marksmans weapons pwn you and the turret far/medium range. Your true only hope is close range or hopefully the machine gun pressure along with a turret causes their aim to fuck up. I'm pretty sure their final primary weapon kills turrets in one shot...a long with players.

Vs Tactition - Feels pretty equal. Tactition has a balanced weapon base with shotgun and rifles. The big upside tactition has is the ability to see players behind walls, BUT I don't beleive he can see Turrets. He will turn the corner ready to rape you, not knowing your buddy is ready to rape him. 

Vs Tactitions Droid- It flies around and when it gets hurt sometimes flies away. This ofcourse makes it hard for your own turret to hit. But the droid ONLY shoots bullets, while your turret has bullets and rockets. One rocket should kill it, fire power is on your side. Also your machine gun takes down flying driods like cake.

Vs Medic- Medic is kinda lower on the list a long with Engineer. Your only real problem is the medic reviving and killing you from behind, but your turret may catch him before you even notice = win. The medic also has a shotgun, but without the abilities of infiltrator or tactition, it doens't always work out so well.

Vs Medics Droid- It follows the medic around shooting regular bullets like Taction droid, but its weak as balls. You or your turret can easily kill it. The only upside it has is staying alive and annoyinngly buzzing around when you kill medic.

Overal Summary-

The Engineer can play support with a strong Turret you can place in tactical areas and good weapons. The downside is fighting long range and cloaked classes. But if you want to camp with spamming mines and hiding in a corner with your turret in the other, that works too. The Engineer is also ideal for protecting assination Targets. On the forums this class has been protrayed as the "weakest" but the problem most people said is that the turret just needs a buff, its a sitting duck that dies easily(unlike the other 2 mobile droids), yet its the main part of playing engineer. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, I might do a write-up on Infiltrator and Markmans and how to be a cheap douchebag, but most of you probably don't care about Killzone3. 3D DOT GAME Heroes?

3D Dot Game Heroes is a new game from Silicon Studio, and being published by Altus and FROMSOFTWARE, the same people that brought the brilliant game, Demon’s Souls.


The story involves of a 2D kingdom called Dotnia(pronounced Dot-knee-a) that was threaten by an evil that stole six magical orbs. A hero wielding a shield and sword had slayed the beast and brought peace to the kingdom. But you know evil never sleeps ... and neither does a hero! In the “new 3D era” the evil returns and the kingdom needs a hero once again!

Details on No More Heroes: Red Zone Edition

A new No More Heroes game...but doesn't really include new stuff. One of those hybrid 1.5 types of things.

No More Heroes is probably my favorite Wii game, and the most ridiculous story I've ever played. Unfortunately when NMH2 came around, my fan-boy hype sort of died down, and bonus didn't care for the PS3 version with Move.

But what slightly caught my intrest again was No More Heroes : Red Zone Edition. This is NMH 1 with "Z Rating" which is like, super adult content in Japan, 5 bosses from NMH2, 10 missions left out of the Wii version, Online rankings and A boss battle mode (Which I was so depressed the first one didn't have) , ps move compatible and "Forbidden View Mode" which seems like looking at the women in the game...naked.

Being a huge fan of the first one, this is exciting. I may go out and buy the second one cheap and used to get back into it. The only downside is that the game in Japan is Yen 3990, which is about $42, but a lot of time the games are more expensive after sent to the U.S and not a direct conversion of pricing. the game is to be released July 21. Any No More Heroes Fans here at Gouki? Or peple who were intrested but didn't have a Wii and didn't want to buy the PS3 port? I see this as a 1.5 version, leave a comment on what you think about the series and this upcoming release :D
